Selling Our Kids and Using Them As Weapons - Blog Entry

09 Dec 2006 11:29 AM

What a sad story. I had a friend whose parents were foster parents, and one time they took in a baby less than a month old who had almost every bone in the body broken. Thankfully, babies heal and recover from broken bones faster (I don't know about bleeding in the brain). The thing that stayed with me for years was that the foster mom told me that the parents would probably wind up getting the child back; an aunt was supposed to take it in, and she said usually the relative would just give the child back to the parents. Things like that make an already-horrid story more tragic.

Create A Family Book - Blog Entry

A great idea, and a great Christmas present! Maybe that's what the grandparents will all get next year, a book detailing the past year. Kids grow so fast, especially while they are so small.

Mom Calls Police On Own Son - Blog Entry

If the mom knew the son already had problems, and the mom knew, why didn't she just hide the presents - at someone else's house if she must - and then put them out Christmas Eve? Any note on the kid's age? I agree with Teresa, she was probably at the end of her rope and regretted doing it. At the same time, if he's punched out a cop, the 'petty larceny' isn't going to be the biggest problem on his record. And the judge may well throw it out of court, anyway.

Did You Know? 'Empirical Evidence' that Homeschooling Works! - Blog Entry

09 Dec 2006 09:58 AM

I fully agree that homeschooling is good, but I also don't trust statistics. The biggest arguement, of course, is that schooled students cover all ranges of parental participation - including those who don't care if their kids bother to attend. A more 'fair' comparison would be of involved parents of schooled kids versus homeschooled kids. I still think HS kids would outperform, but it would be nice to see (and it would be even more concrete evidence for those wimpy naysayers). Great blog.

Scrabble as a Learning Tool - Blog Entry

Took me a few minutes to realize that 'Pinkston' was your last name; I was wracking my brain trying to remember if I had read about any 'other' way to play Scrabble, LOL. Great blog, and a terrific tool! Do you keep score or just play for fun? I'm guessing if you are using it as a 'guerrilla' learning tool you keep score as a game, but I'm just curious.

Babies in the News: A Toddler Was Trapped in a Vending Machine - Blog Entry

I don't know if I could survive a three year old who not only climbs in machines but also undoes screws. I think I'd surrender at that point...

Bing Crosby's "White Christmas" - Blog Entry

No one can sing it as good as Bing. I think "White Christmas" is my favorite holiday movie!
