I look forward to reading the upcoming blogs on the political ramifications! Thanks, Val!

Why Homeschool?: Energy Level - Blog Entry

16 Sep 2007 07:59 PM

It makes perfect sense to me. I have a feeling my oldest two, at least, would be labeled as problem kids because they have high energy levels. One reason among many I homeschool!

Do Homeschoolers Need Regulations to Tell Them What to Teach? - Blog Entry

I agree, the idea of braindead parents once the kid turns six is hysterical. It's a good thing we have the state here, ready to help us...LOL.

Why My Kids Haven't Taken a Test Yet - Blog Entry

04 Sep 2007 07:11 PM

I think you are right about testing at home - I don't see a need for it, if you are constantly working with your kids. You should have a general idea of their weak points, if not a specific one. I'm not looking forward to the state standardized tests. About the only reason I can see to test is to prepare the kids to take the great big tests by people who don't have a clue what to do with the results. That's useful! Great blog.

The Lapbooking Series: An Introduction - Blog Entry

04 Sep 2007 07:08 PM

I am looking forward to learning more. I have not heard of lapbooks before, and am still not completely clear after checking the previous blog and off-site pictures, but I am going to poke around until I get it! This looks like something my kids would love!

Teaching Socialization in a Structured Environment - Blog Entry

Maybe she was thinking that when your kids grew up and got jury duty, they wouldn't know how to socialize. I'm not really sure where else we are supposed to sit still and shut up.

In my initial homeschooling research, I was interested to learn that part of the push for public education was to prepare the kids to work in factories in the earlier part of the industrial revolution. I think all this socializing bunk is because everyone is afraid our kids won't learn how to sit down, shut up, and take what they are told from an authority figure at face value.

Oh, drats. I was thinking it was real. Either way, I was too busy cracking up to comment! Great spoof!

How To Estimate Reading Levels - Blog Entry

04 Sep 2007 06:56 PM

Thank you so much! I am nervous about doing this with my bookworm six year old, but interested in the results! I think we will try it tomorrow. We have just been using the 'try it' method; I have gotten several books on a subject out of the library and kept them for a few weeks, and let them explore at leisure. I'm always pleased to see my four year old (as well as my six year old) browsing the higher level books. Then again, I'm always pleased to see them reading!

Do Homeschoolers Brainwash Their Kids? - Blog Entry

04 Sep 2007 06:53 PM

Even without the religous angle, you communicate your values to your kids, in or out of school. If they are HSed, they are just more likely to pick it up. I 'brainwash' my kids to be polite (among other things), but it seems more and more like society thinks teaching manners and such should be school curriculum. Like you said, all parents are teaching their kids. It's only when someone else dislikes what we teach that it is called 'brainwashing'.

Discipline in the Homeschool Classroom - Blog Entry

What a wonderful teaching philosophy. IMO, I think there is a difference between "fun" and "hungry to learn more". I hope my kids are always hungry to learn, but thanks for putting the onus on me as the teacher.
