Another question to ask is - do I really need to go to a private college when public school will cost significantly less? What is the real difference when you are applying for jobs a few years later? There are a handful of professions where it may make a difference, but overall, I think it gives you more in terms of 'bragging rights' than income advancement. I doubt most employers say, "Oh, I see you went to xyz college, I'll have to pay you more money." (I say this as a private school graduate.) Helping Your Parents Financially - Blog Entry29 Nov 2006 08:43 PM Turnabout is my FIL, who takes no part in the budget. If anything happened to my MIL, I doubt he would know where the checkbook is. I'm not even sure he withdraws money from the bank - my MIL gives him his 'food' and 'gas' money each week. But I agree, the biggest problem comes from the 50s and 60s housewives who were taught to hand over the checkbook. My grandmother lost her husband over 20 years ago, but she did prove that, with a little help, new skills can be learned at an advanced age. They bought two brand new cars and now are struggling financially.
