Okay, Miriam, did my dh fax you my list of topics that I was making to blog about? :D Seriously, great point. Another question to ask is - do I really need to go to a private college when public school will cost significantly less? What is the real difference when you are applying for jobs a few years later? There are a handful of professions where it may make a difference, but overall, I think it gives you more in terms of 'bragging rights' than income advancement. I doubt most employers say, "Oh, I see you went to xyz college, I'll have to pay you more money." (I say this as a private school graduate.)

Hey, at least ya'll had a year of working! I graduated college in June and my DD was born in July...my dh spent HIS post-high school single years living it up and raking in the debt! Argh! At the same time, now that we have three-almost-four kids, we've realized the need to be more responsible so we can have some retirement and send those kids to college.

I think we had this happen to us last year at Christmas. We thought we were just confused and lost (a fairly normal state) but I couldn't figure out how we lost a $50 giftcard.

I thought you were just going to talk about the ridiculous merchant scammers who charge you an arm and a leg if you don't use the card in 6 months or something. That's a scam, IMO, if I pay cash and then they rip me off. But, wow, someone figured out how to one-up that!

We do the Santa thing, but I have a friend who doesn't do it at all - she doesn't do Halloween or the Easter bunny either. I wonder how she'd react to this? It's an interesting idea, but I'm not sure I'm altogether up to giving a stranger my kid's name and phone number, though, just from the 'psychotic mom' perspective....

Turnabout is my FIL, who takes no part in the budget. If anything happened to my MIL, I doubt he would know where the checkbook is. I'm not even sure he withdraws money from the bank - my MIL gives him his 'food' and 'gas' money each week. But I agree, the biggest problem comes from the 50s and 60s housewives who were taught to hand over the checkbook. My grandmother lost her husband over 20 years ago, but she did prove that, with a little help, new skills can be learned at an advanced age.

My inlaws always said they would never go back - after dealing with two cars they did. They bought two brand new cars and now are struggling financially. I can understand the emotions behind it - I've had days when I want to kick the lights out of one of our cars - but I think the strain of the car payments would be even worse.
