10 Reasons I'm Thankful I'm Homeschooling - Blog Entry

A great list! But wait, if you have 'school' (ie learning ops) all the time, I'm sure you got some 'education' in over the holidays. Maybe not on Egypt, but definitely on cooking and family bonding! ;)

I suppose I can understand the bureaucratic logic involved, but you would think common sense would prevail, here.

When Homeschooling Isn't Working - Blog Entry

I have a hard time evisioning a child who struggled at home thriving in a group setting. But as I thought about it, I realize that I did. True, I think I would have benefited from HSing as a child - though not with my mother; she would be quick to tell you that SHE would not thrive in that situation - but I did pretty good in school, primarily because I am WAY too competitive. Specifically, I had one teacher (with two classes) in middle school who would post the top ten grades for the week on the board with the names. I always wanted to be on top, and did all the extra credit I could to make it. However, the teacher topped out at something like 105% and he listed names alphabetically, so Mr. Ross always beat Ms. Taylor - very sad. Obviously, there were many things I disliked about the public education system (like, I really think I could have moved on in most of my classes, especially the ones whose work I taught myself from the book and worked ahead) but I did enjoy the competitive aspect of school. Not necessarily the best attitude, but it DID work.

That is something else to consider, though; the parent. Some parents really aren't suited for HSing, even if they really want to. My mom would never make it; among other things, she is clinically depressed and thinks staying home with children is a fate worse than death. She considered HSing my brother (11 yrs younger than me) but decided not to. So that may be another reason to send a child to school - finding that no matter how hard you try or want to, you are not suited to HSing. I think those are probably few and far between - from what I've seen, most parents who start to are those suited to it - but it's not always the case.

Parents Beware The Hidden Danger In Some Kids Toys - Blog Entry

Gifted toys can be the hardest to control, because of the emotional baggage that can come with them (especially from inlaws). Plus, depending on the grandparents, sheer numbers can make examination so difficult! But safety is definitely priority one.

Relief Society: Five Tips on Taking Meals to Families - Blog Entry

One of my favorite parts about having a baby was having the RS bring over dinners...okay, it was a little lower on the list than the 'biggies', but it was always wonderful! We're going to be having our next baby in a fairly new ward, and I'm interested in seeing how that goes, but meals are such a blessing. Thanks for some great suggestions!

Primary Time: Teaching Reverence to Older Children - Blog Entry

Some great ideas! Now I just have to figure out how to handle multiple small ones; whenever dh or I have to take our three (5, 3, and almost-2) to church by ourselves, we always wind up sitting in the foyer. Even when there is two of us, with so many little ones, it seems like more than one someone is always acting up!

LOL on the pinching to take out siblings; I could easily see that happening in a few years!

A Review of "Three Against Hitler" - Blog Entry

This was one of the books I read not long after joining the church. I was amazed by the courage and determination that Rudi and his friends showed. I can only pray that the youth in our church today - and my own children especially - will show similar courage when the pressure is on. On the other hand, it makes turning down an R rated movie a lot easier in comparison, wouldn't you think?

Oh, this is hysterical! I should reprimend you, since I was hoping you would help me with my book fetish, but I'm laughing too hard - maybe tomorrow!

What about the kitchen? I mean, folks cooked over fires for years, right? Think about how much space you could have if you just got rid of the oven and started cooking outside all the time! If you made the move to paper plates and plastic silverware (bad for the environment I know but still....), you could toss the sink and some of the cabinets! :D
