13 Sep 2006 08:58 PM Football -- a new experience
Well, we're now football parents since my nephew has joined his high school football team. Day one, while registering him for school, the counseling office staff started asking him to join. He said yes-no-maybe. Again he was encouraged by the football coach, registration staff. He said yes-no-maybe. Finally, after explaining to him that even though he signed up late, this was the year to learn because they wouldn't want a beginner when he should play varsity. We also explained how nice football scholarships can be. Finally, his friends talked him into and he went and came back with a huge grin because he had had fun! Then we got a visit from one of the football mom's who explained the dress code -- wear team colors or be uncool. Then we got the pamplet explaining clothing requirements. Turns out the 16+ year olds on the team work at the Seahawks to earn money for the team gear, so most out of pocket expenses are very limited. We pay fees for gym use, registration, some of the practice gear, cleats but in exchange, my nephew has 3 hour practices and is meeting many new friends. We also have weekly team potluck dinners for the entire family to socialize at. Next, a real live game! Rah Rah! Somehow, that dress code thingie seems to be overdoing it a bit. Our school colors were green and white, but we didn't have to wear them constantly. If this were a school uniform, that would be different, but--when kids wear regular clothes--this stuff about certain clothing being cool and certain clothing being uncool is what we need to be steering away from when it comes to what goes on in school.
