Inventory methods aren't just for big business

With two children in the house, food flows through at incredible rates. Worse, every day, one or the other comes home with a tale about this teacher wants us to have an office supply or my battery ran out. Because our kitchen is somewhat small, we have a pantry just off the garage where our groceries enter the house. So our system is fairly simple. We buy two of every product (at least). When that item comes upstairs for use, we write down that another of that item needs to be bought. Everyone in the family can write on the list anything that is needed. When we go shopping, we have an up to date list. We never run out. Well, almost never run out. Mistakes are still made.

Excellent idea. It reminds me of how Prince Charles referred to his sons as "an heir and a spare." You have an heir and a spare of each shopping item.
