Want to know what it takes to have a great neighborhood garage sale?

This weekend is our annual neighborhood garage sale. Typically over 40 families join in and that results in real clout with buyers. Items actually sell well. This is what our neighborhood has going :

1) several highly dedicated volunteers that visit house to house informing everyone about the upcoming sale

2) volunteers that make a map of all the participants -- everyone is given maps to hand out to those who come browsing for bargains

3) volunteers that help neighbors move their unneeded items and who help sell their goods

4) volunteers that post signs at main road entrances and every location involved

5) volunteers that place ads in the local paper with the big items for drawing power

So what is the cost? Only $5 per day per household -- talk about a real deal!

And the benefit? We see more of our neighbors on this week than at any other time. The neighborhood stays neat and clean and not trashed. Happy faces when that good buy is spotted and the happy purchaser goes home delighted. It helps build trust in a racially mixed neighborhood such as ours. Maybe you should think about organizing one in your home town?

Diane, thanks! How come you don't have any neighbors?
