Census 2000 Family Statistics Terrifying - Blog Entry

19 Apr 2006 05:43 AM

Our society is moving farther and farther away from the concept of the traditional family. This is extremely unfortunate. We should all be working towards creating the best environment for the children in our society to grow up in--with their own, married parents.

How fun! I am looking forward to when my little boy is old enough to do be interested in crafts. At one and a half, scribbling is as artistic as he get--although he loves to use a bunch of different colored crayons!

Standards of Comparison: Housewife versus Stay At Home Mom - Blog Entry

11 Apr 2006 06:08 AM

Hmmmm, I just really am a bit torn on this topic. I think a lot of people don't want to speak out against housewives without children for fear of a backlash, but I still don't think that most of us REALLY think that staying home when there are no kids involved is the noblest of careers.

Freezing Meals for After the Baby - Blog Entry

Thanks for the reviews. When I had my first child I freezed meals ahead of time. That was a big help, especially since I had a c-section and didn't want to be on my feet too much. With my next child (due in Sept) I'll definitely do it again. The books you've mentioned sound like great resources!

The One Right Way to Discipline - Blog Entry

28 Mar 2006 05:23 AM

I definitely don't agree that parents have an innate ability to discipline! This cannot be true because so many parents really have no control over their children. I worked for over 5 years with kids of all different ages. Some of their parents were totally clueless! As a parent myself, I know that loving my child is innate, but knowing how to discipline him is not. Like most parents, I try something, it doesn't work, I try something else, and that doesn't work, and so on.

Then I decided to do a little studying, from experts. My husband and I took a few parenting seminars. The techniques they explained really made a lot of sense, and we have changed our ways to becoming more consistent and predictable. This has helped immensely.

As with dieting, yes the fads come and go. But still, there is the time-tested strategy that will work and has worked from the end of time. For dieting, we all know that is eating well and exercising, and with parenting we know that it is being consistent in our discipline. Yet, it sure helps to consult some experts!

Spring Break in Cancun - What Are Your Teens Really Doing? - Blog Entry

28 Mar 2006 05:13 AM

Yikes. Though I am not surprised. Parents that allow their teenagers to go on these types of excursions are really fooling themselves if they say thier child would never get into trouble.

Should You Bank Baby's Cord Blood - Blog Entry

28 Mar 2006 05:09 AM

Unfortunately, it seems that it really is too early in the game to tell if cord blood banking can really be useful. Now that more parents are doing it, I am sure that we will really be able to tell the benefits later down the road.
