Singles Appreciation Day

Most of the year I don’t mind being single, in fact, there are a lot of things I like about it. I like having time to myself, I like being able to make decisions on my own, and most of all I really like the one-on-one time I get with my son because of it. However, being alone on the holidays can get lonely, especially on ones like today that are so focused on a love that isn’t in your life anymore. While everyone else is getting spoiled with candle lit dinners, you’re at home alone or taking care of little ones. It’s probably not exactly how you imagined things would turn out, but it all depends on how you choose to look at it.

Many singles refer to this day as “singles awareness” day. They see everyone else posting all over Facebook about how wonderful their significant other is and how spoiled they are getting. They’ve chosen to look at others and see what they don’t have. I find this a very depressing way to look at things. I’ve chosen to treat this day as “singles appreciation” day. I like singlehood. I like being able to have a little space to do what I want every now and then. If I feel like going out with the girl, I don’t have to worry about anyone waiting for me at home. If I feel like wasting the night away on Pinterest, I don’t have to answer to anyone but myself. I like the freedom I have right now. I still miss the companionship of having someone by my side sometimes, but for the time being I’m going to focus on the benefits of being single rather than wishing my life away over something I don’t have at this moment. That’s not to say it won’t be there someday, but for now I’m going to enjoy this time I have with my son. Not every kid is lucky enough to have this kind of one-on-one time with their parent, I think we’ll take advantage of it while we can!
