Breastfeeding Ads vs. Formula Company Lobbies

Over the last year, the Ad Council (those people responsible for cutting edge public service announcements), with sponsorship from the US government, has been creating PSA’s aimed at the promotion of breastfeeding. You probably haven’t seen the ads, though, because they have been critically scrutinized by whom else but the International Formula Council who has aggressively lobbied to prevent the government from airing the clips as they were originally created. What’s the hype about? Well it seems the ad council opted to focus on the possible harm that can come to infants who are fed formula and that doesn’t sit … Continue reading

Rick Santorum’s Comments on Health Insurance

The Republican candidate’s campaigns continue. Rick Santorum has been declared the winner of the Minnesota primary, the Colorado non-binding caucus, and the Missouri “beauty contest”. Santorum spoke a lot about health insurance in his victory speech. One of the reasons why it is important for a candidate to win a primary is because of the delegates. The candidate who wins a state primary will get the votes of the delegates of that state. This is important because eventually, the Republican party will have to select one of the many candidates who are running. It is the delegates who vote. The … Continue reading

Lip, Lip Hooray

It’s amazing what you see in elementary schools these days. For instance, the other day my second grader and I watched in stunned silence as a mom slathered Desitin all over her kindergartener’s face and lips before heading out to the parking lot on an exceptionally cold day. Desitin, as in the stuff you put on your baby’s butt to soothe and relieve diaper rash. The boy wriggled, squirmed and moaned, but the mom was not deterred. She continued to apply the white cream on his upper lip, cheeks and chin like a seasoned cosmetologist. Apparently, I wasn’t the only … Continue reading

Chocolate and Dieting Can Be Friends

Do you dream in chocolate? Do chocolate chips, German chocolate cake, and red velvet cupcakes dance perform a sweet ballet in your head? If so, the word “diet” must scare you to death. Did I say, “death”? The first thing that comes to my mind is Death by Chocolate Cake. That is the kind of temptation that wrecks a diet. Just when you think victory is in your grasp you pass the candy aisle and see chocolate bars like neon signs saying, “Eat Me”. You try to resist but your craving demands satisfaction so you give in and eat a … Continue reading

Regrouping and Getting Back on Track

Recently I made the commitment to finally take real steps to lose weight and get back into shape. For the first time in a few years I looked with hope at the prospect of taking this journey seriously. I was excited. I had a plan. I had the tools. I had the motivation. I even had the support of friends and family. I knew it was do or die as I could no longer deny that I was an overweight woman. Even typing that I am an overweight woman makes me cringe but I decided now was my time. I … Continue reading

Travel and Your Nose

My parents gave me a great birthday present this year: a ticket to fly home for a visit. It’s the first time in more than a year that I’ve flown, so I was more than a little nervous as we rose into the sky. In the end, I made it to the East Coast and back safely and had a lovely vacation. The only problem was my nose. The morning after my arrival, I went to blow my stuffy schnozz and ended up with a nosebleed. It’s not too hard to figure out why: I’m most likely to get nosebleeds … Continue reading

Thoughts on the Mumbai Attacks, the Holtzbergs

Dear readers, I wanted to write before about this, but I could not concentrate. My heart is broken, there are no words, it is hard for me to formulate my thoughts. I hate the way this sounds like a cliché, but I felt like I lost sisters and brothers, literally. I felt like sitting Shiva (the seven day mourning period observed by families of the deceased). Finally, I am able to write something and I have to. The Mumbai attacks have sent the world reeling. What did the Holtzbergs do? Did they stockpile weapons against their enemies? Did they teach … Continue reading

Do You Play Games with Your Spouse?

I seem to have developed an affinity for coming up with potentially misleading titles this week. A couple of days ago I wrote Change Your Bedding, Change Your Sex Life, which could have been construed to mean I was implying something more simple than what I really was. Now this title could be taken to mean I wonder if you play mind games with your spouse. That might make for an interesting topic one day, but today’s not that day. I’m actually talking about real games. Fun games. Board games, card games, video games, etc. Games Couples Play I’m more … Continue reading
