South Carolina Genealogy Resources

South Carolina flagSouth Carolina has the nickname of “The Palmetto State”. Are you looking for more information about your ancestors who once lived in South Carolina? If so, then this blog will help you. Here are several online South Carolina genealogy resources for you to use.

Internment.net has cemetery records online. You can start using the website by putting your ancestor’s first and last name into the search engine at the top of the page. Or, you can start by selecting one of the counties in South Carolina. At a glance, it looks like about half of the counties have a link attached. If there is a link, it indicates that Internment.net has information about the records from cemeteries that are located within the county.

Ancestry.com has a page that is filled with links to all of their South Carolina collections of records. In order to access these records, you need to have an Ancestry.com membership. Once in a while, some collections will be offered for free. Return to their page often. Ancestry.com does a great job of making it clear when a collection is new, has been updated, or is currently offered for free.

FamilySearch has a Wiki page about South Carolina. There are links that will take you to FamilySearch Wiki pages that are about each, individual, county in the state. There are also links to more information about Colonial Parishes and Colonial Townships. Towards the bottom of the page, there are a series of links that will take you to FamilySearch Wiki pages about specific FamilySearch collections of South Carolina records.

Facebook has a Community Page for FamilySearch South Carolina Genealogy Research. This is a good resource for genealogists who want to connect with other genealogists who are also working in South Carolina genealogy right now. It is also a good place to go to find links to FamilySearch South Carolina record collections.

GeneaLinks has a search engine at the top of their page. Put your ancestor’s first and last name into it. Choose which kind of record you want to search for: vital, birth, death, marriage, divorce, or “Genealogy”. GeneaLinks also has helpful information for genealogists who are new to South Carolina genealogy. Did you know that South Carolina issues more than one type of document for birth, death, and marriage records?

Cyndi’s List is probably the most comprehensive list of links to online genealogy resources. If it’s on the internet, Cyndi’s List most likely has a link to it. They have a page called “United States – South Carolina”. Choose a category to start with from their long list.
