This can be a great way to get heavier fabrics at a great price. 2) Use a neatral color as the base for the curtains, and add on coordinating fabrics. Sheets serve as a great neutral base, and you can usually buy flat white or cream sheets on clearance for very little money. You can also find them at thrift stores, but it's probably easier to find enough matching fabric on the clearance table. 3) Buy remnants that coordinate with the base fabric, and don't be afraid to mix remnants. You can either do a country-style quilt block around the edges or just the bottom edge, or you can do bands of coordinating fabrics across or down the curtains. 4) For trim, don't be afraid to experiment with clearanced trim items and fabric dyes! You can usually dye trims easily, as long as you pick a darker color than the original color. If you have one dark color in your fabric, this is a great way to get expensive looking trim at a deep discount. You can easily dye even bright colors like orange or fuschia to a dark blue or brown, and then you have a gorgeous coordinating trim to edge the curtains. Decorating on a Penny - Blog Entry20 Mar 2008 09:22 AM Frugal decorating--my forte! Here are some great ideas for keeping things fresh in your home without spending a lot of money: 1) Use paint on one wall to accent a room. If you're afraid of using color, this is a great way to ease away from neutrals. It's also very cheap, as you can use a quart or less of paint and change the way a room feels. 2) Rearrange your furniture! It's amazing what a little furniture shuffling will do to bring new life to a room. Break up matching sets and shuffle chairs between rooms for some fun. 3) Paint wooden pieces of furniture. If you have some beat up wooden furniture, an easy way to breathe new life into it is to paint it. If you're afraid of special paint finishes, stick with a solid color. It will look like new and save an expensive trip to the furniture store. 4) If you need new furniture, shop at yard sales & thrift stores with an eye to repainting and recovering if necessary. There are many pieces of upholstered furniture that can easily be re-upholstered with a good staple gun and glue gun. Experiment or take a class at your local craft store--still cheaper than buying new! Also be open to repurposing furniture--a good low chest of drawers can easily serve as a buffet table in a dining room! Frugal Easter Basket Ideas - Blog Entry20 Mar 2008 09:15 AM We use the same Easter baskets each year...I picked them up at Goodwill brand new for 69 cents each. We also keep and re-use the plastic Easter eggs. I fill them with candy, or pennies for the piggy bank. For their "gifts" I usually give DD some new hair clips or some such, and DS gets a few toys from the dollar store. It's never a "big" item and they don't expect one. I think part of the fun is keeping expectations down and then whatever they get is a happy surprise. I've also used school supplies that were on clearance, and I've made up games with handwritten cards like, 'Do the biggest jump you can' or 'Walk backwards from the house to the playset'. Silly things but personalized to our family, and the kids love them!
