Do Reusable Coffee Filters Save Money? - Blog Entry

I too save my coffee from the morning by putting it in the refridgerator! It certainly makes it easier to grab a quick cup, and I like it cold too sometimes :)

Revisiting Circumcision - Blog Entry

Thanks for mentioning that the studies may be biased since they were performed in Africa - that was a very important part of my own research on the topic. I had to wonder how relevant the findings of the studies were.

Will Your Baby Remember This? - Blog Entry

11 Mar 2007 07:19 PM

I've read some articles about synapses being formed that result in a sort of "residual" memory, in that the cells actually retain the memory. So perhaps the brain doesn't store the memory for easy reference throughout life, but certain things like PAIN (like that from circumcision) or sounds, smells and tastes associated with certain instances may be remembered. ;) I haven't read your other entry yet, off to do so.

What to do When Nobody Gives You a Shower - Blog Entry

05 Mar 2007 07:52 AM

I think "proper etiquette" is not so much the norm anymore - I always take active participation in my own showers and it was always a fun way for me to bond with family and friends for a special occasion, and it was always appreciated ;)

5 Cultural Myths About Starting Solids - Blog Entry

Karabu - I know what you mean by being disturbed by the "just fine" attitude. If everyone in the world were only "just fine", then what would become of the human race? I find that phrase to be rather annoying actually. Among other issues, I have had many people try to make me feel bad for choosing not to vaccinate, and their argument is often that "their children are vaxed and they are just fine". It ends up sounding less like an argument to convince me and more like they are trying to convince themselves.

Suicide: What Do You Think about It? - Blog Entry

01 Mar 2007 09:03 PM

My very good friend from high school found her mother had killed herself this passed holiday season. She certainly was not a selfish woman, in fact - I think she was probably one of the best mothers I've known. Sadly, about six years ago she was in a car accident that changed her forever. Whether it was the trauma of the accident, the medications for the pain, or the antidepressants she ultimately took because of either or both, she had since tried to kill herself SEVERAL times. She succeeded, and left behind my friend, her two sons and a husband, not to mention all of us who thought of her often. So I totally agree, people who feel like they need to commit suicide are not selfish. We will probably never know why she felt she needed to leave this world.

5 Cultural Myths About Starting Solids - Blog Entry

01 Mar 2007 08:55 PM

I remember when my first was born, being advised to put cereal in a bedtime bottle as early as two months or starting solids no later then four months!

I know that the AAP recommends to start somewhere around four-six months, and here you say that it is "not going to bad" for baby if you start as early as 4 months. But I have read that the GI tract is typically not fully formed until at least 7 months - actually sometimes referred to as "leaky gut" - and therefore should not be introduced to solids until afterward.

I sometimes wonder if our cultural inclination toward starting solids early has less to do with what's best for our babies and more to do with the ONLY milestone that we as parents of infants can exhibit some kind of control over. It is certainly the joy of parenting to watch our children reach each milestone, and eating solids is no less exciting then learning to walk. But I worry that our eagerness may be affecting our general public health.

Kids And Juice---Are They A Healthy Mix? - Blog Entry

27 Feb 2007 08:44 PM

For us it's the outside influence that we just can't seem to keep the kids away from that will break the good habit. Luckily, my daughter knows that she just can't expect juice or pop on a regular basis at home. But she has since developed a "sweeter" sweet tooth thanks to outside influences. I personally don't trust "fake" sugar to be the answer, either. Splenda, aspartame, etc. They scare me more than the real stuff, and I try to remind my daughter of the fact that "real" is better than "chemical", as well as that "moderation is key", and things like that. I don't like to make struggles over food.

Baby Shower Games - Blog Entry

27 Feb 2007 07:09 PM

For my first shower, I spent hours and hours designing a baby shower game "booklet" that I was intensely proud of - and no one seemed to notice how cool it was but me. I put a lot of thought into it, but it wasn't the hit I thought it would be.

We decided not to have any shower games the second time, and it was very successful. I find that adults tend to get very bored playing games at showers, so we decided to have a short co-ed shower and serve a classy, adult menu. Everyone brought their significant others, ate, had dessert as we opened gifts, chatted a bit during coffee and then left. It was a public hall, otherwise we had considered even serving cocktails. We had many positive remarks on the shower, such as that they were pleased it wasn't boring or juvenile as most showers they had been to were! LOL

When Your Uterus is Deformed - Blog Entry

27 Feb 2007 07:01 PM

Were you diagnosed with a bicornuate uterus, then? I wrote an article about them here: Let's Talk About Having a Bicornuate Uterus (http://pregnancy.families.com/blog/lets-talk-about-having-a-bicornuate-uterus). Amazing that it did not even affect your pregnancies until that fourth!
