Supplies for Seasonal Cleaning

I kicked off 2013 with a determination to conquer what I call a lost art in society, housekeeping.  My way of defining housekeeping is cleaning, repairs, decorating and organizing.

January’s focus is on cleaning, which I blogged about the three main types of cleaning:  seasonal, deep and maintenance.  Last week I introduced you to a seasonal cleaning plan and today we are going to talk about the supplies you need.

As a reminder, seasonal cleaning targets those areas inside and outside the home that you are likely to get to once-a-year.  Examples include washing windows and cleaning out the garage.

It’s really up to you what season you feel is the best to tackle these types of projects.  But the idea is to spread them out.  And hopefully by now you have put together a plan.

Now it’s time to think about the supplies you will need to conquer your seasonal cleaning.  It’s always a good idea to prepare ahead of time.

Since its January, you might start thinking about spring projects you plan on tackling.  For instance, I plan on washing the windows and cleaning out the garage and shed.

This is a good time to start a list of the supplies I will need.  Sure, spring might not arrive for another couple of months but you really can’t go wrong in planning ahead.

One reason for this is you can start purchasing items slowly.  Using my garage as an example, it’s going to require several plastic containers.  I want to get the clutter off the floor and into some boxes.

Once spring arrives and I’m ready to take on the garage, I don’t want to go out and spend oodles of money on several containers.  So by purchasing them ahead of time (especially when I’m looking for sales) and spreading it out, my pocketbook isn’t hit at one time.

This is a concept you can adapt in many areas of your home.  Preparing and planning ahead can actually save you money.

So when spring finally arrives, you should start thinking about the supplies you will need for the summer projects and so on.  Each season you are in, it’s the perfect time to plan for the next.

The best way to figure out what kind of supplies you will need is to enter the room or area you are going to clean.  Take a good look around.  By visually seeing the project before you, it will help you think of supplies to purchase.

If you haven’t already put together a seasonal cleaning plan, now is the time to do it.  And while you’re at, make a list of the supplies you will need.
