Randy Travis- Losing It

You know, a lot of country singers lived their lives like country songs. Hank Williams died in a car on the way to a gig in Virginia at the young age of 29. George Jones’ wife once took his car keys because he was drunk. However, she didn’t take the lawn mower keys and Jones drove it 8 miles to get his hooch. Some might say you write best about that which you know and if that’s true, country great Randy Travis must have a really big hit brewing up inside of him. Travis has been in the headlines a … Continue reading

Connecting to Your Teen

Connecting to a teenager can sometimes be a challenge. However, there are several factors that will play into this including their age, their gender, how well you are currently getting along with each other and your communication skills. Age can make a difference. I remember connecting to my oldest son to be difficult around the age of 12 and 13. But now at 18 we have some great conversations. Some ages are more difficult and that can even vary from one child to the next. In general, the middle school years tend to be the most difficult. But I know … Continue reading

Ways to Save on a Six Flags Staycation

It’s never a good day when travelers are actually excited to see gas prices hovering near $4. Three dollars and 89 cents for a gallon of unleaded–SCORE!! While the cost of gas has fallen slightly in the last couple weeks, from its highest levels since July 2008, Americans are still paying nearly a dollar more per gallon than a year ago. As a result, families from coast-to-coast continue to restructure their summer vacation plans in order to preserve their household budgets, and still have fun in the sun. That goes double for clans living in and around Chicago. According to … Continue reading

The Controversy Behind Social Security Disability Insurance

The federal government has a program called Social Security Disability Insurance. It is designed to be used by people who are unable to work due to a mental or physical health issue. There are judges who are supposed to evaluate each individual case, and determine who is eligible. It seems that one of the judges has an extremely high rate of approval. An investigation has been started. Earlier this week, the Wall Street Journal published a front page article that pointed out the very high award rate of one of the administrative judges whose job it is to evaluate applications … Continue reading

Tiger Woods Steps Out of the Spotlight While Garth Brooks Steps Back In

With his personal life in turmoil, Tiger Woods has announced he plans to take an “indefinite break” from golf. Tiger has been mostly silent since his early morning car crash, but finally admitted to infidelity in a statement on his web site. He said, in part “I am deeply aware of the disappointment and hurt that my infidelity has caused to so many people, most of all my wife and children.” At first, Tiger, who refused to speak with the police about the wreck, only admitted to vague “transgressions.” But, as more and more alleged mistresses came forth to the … Continue reading

Swine Flu Vaccine For Everybody… but Seniors

The swine flu vaccine is coming soon — the first doses will be available the first week of October. But doctors are telling seniors to hold off on getting a swine flu vaccine. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate that three point four million doses of swine flu vaccine will be available the first week of October — in nasal spray form. Shots will soon follow, for a total of nearly 200 million doses of swine flu vaccine available by the end of 2009. Once the distribution is in full swing, you can expect to see twenty … Continue reading

Making Memories

‘It’s our memories that make us,’ – this is the first line of Requiem for a Beast a picture book for older children and young adults. Though the book was in that case talking about indigenous people of Australia, in a sense it’s the same true for each of us. We are what we remember. A psychologist once told me that the mind chooses to forget those things that are too painful- that it doesn’t want to deal with. But I’ve also heard someone say that those with a happy childhood don’t store up memories. Since they both seem to … Continue reading

Sarah Palin: Supermom or In Way Over Her Head?

Republican presidential campaign, vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin shocked some supporters yesterday by announcing that her 17-year-old daughter Bristol is five months pregnant. According to insiders, Palin, the 44-year-old Alaskan governor and mom of five children released her statement to the media yesterday to combat an Internet rumor that Bristol may have mothered Palin’s youngest son, Trig, who was born 4 months ago with Down Syndrome. Apparently, this particular rumor has been circulating for a while, though ever since John McCain selected Palin to be his vice president late last week, the buzz on Bristol has reached epic proportions. Personally, … Continue reading
