Solutions for The Troublesome Tongue

Yesterday I talked about the dangers of the tongue in marriage relationships. All too often that is our spouse or family- the people we should be closest to that come in for the brunt of it. Surely this is a good reason then for us to learn to temper our tongues. It might well be an interesting idea for a married couple to do a bible study together about the tongue and its effects. This might make us more prone to stop and think before we speak. The bible has a lot to say, in James 1:26, James3:6-10, and 1 … Continue reading

Getting Rid of Clutter

What do you keep in your handbag? I posed this question recently on the forum and a number of you responded. Your answers made me feel better about the clutter in my handbags. Women’s handbags and what they contain have long been the subject of amusement, particularly to men. Years ago my husband and I taught Sunday school,pre-schoolers aged 3-5. When it came time for the collection, one little girl rummaged around in her handbag. Out came a handkerchief, a play lipstick, sweet wrappers, a bracelet, several small toys, and other paraphernalia before she found the money. My husband watched … Continue reading

Unlocking a Bible Passage – Part 2

Yesterday we looked at unlocking a passage of scripture and seeing how to apply it to your life. I hope you had fun going through Acts 3 and dividing it up. I’d love to see what some of you came up with. I’m sure there would be some similarities and some differences with what God revealed to me. Anyway here is mine from Acts 3 Divisions Acts 3: 1-11 Peter, in Jesus’ name and power, heals a lame man. Acts 3: 12-18 Peter seizes the opportunity to teach people about Jesus. Acts 3: 19-26 Peter urges his listeners to repent … Continue reading

How Long Does it Take to Make a Habit?

Regardless of whether I want anyone else to know or not, I definitely have some habits I would let go of. Over the years, I have been amazed at how few days/times it can take for a habit to form—either good or bad. As a parent, it is not easy to know if a child’s new behavior is going to “stick” or not—is it just a passing phase? Or is it going to contribute to a habit that lasts a lifetime? How long does it take for something to become a habit and how can we make that work for … Continue reading

Unlocking a Bible Passage – part 1

You’ve decided you need to get more serious about your reading of God’s Word and applying it to your life. But how do you go about it? One way I learned years ago, when I was a discussion leader in a BSF (Bible Study Fellowship) class, was a technique known as homiletics. This is one way of unlocking the meaning of a passage. Over the years I have used other methods for learning more of God’s Word but I have found this method effective and keep coming back to it. So here, as I remember it, are the principles involved: … Continue reading

Despite that, eighty-one percent of women complained of physical symptoms of stress. How do you know if you’re stressed? Physical symptoms like headache, fatigue, and muscle tension. Another Resolution

Another day, another year begins and another resolution. Today, many resolutions will be made, resolutions about planned changes in behavior, attitudes and lifestyles. I know at least one friend whose New Year’s resolution is to lose weight. For some people the changes may only be minor. For others they could mean a major shake up. But the reality of New Year’s resolutions is that that are easily made and often just as easily broken. A recent poll in the South Coast Register asked people what they thought about new year’s resolutions and most decided they were a waste of time. … Continue reading

Misconceptions – Part 2

Misconceptions can affect us in the Christian life. Misconceptions can even cause us to give up on our faith. As a child I made a commitment to Christ. Sadly, either no-one explained to me at the time that I once I became a Christian I would not instantly become perfect and sinless. Or if they did, I never heard it. The result was that even through I read my bible, went to church, prayed and tried to live a Christian life, in my eyes I failed because I still sinned. This led me to conclude that it obviously hadn’t worked. … Continue reading
