Why Black Friday Shopping and Kids Don’t Mix

What kind of parent takes his/her children shopping on Black Friday morning? I posed that question last year in a blog and got a variety of answers. Personally, I wouldn’t dream of dragging my child out of bed at 3, 4, 5 a.m. on the day after Thanksgiving, so that she could sit in a cart while I tried to score deals on Christmas gifts. But that’s just me. Apparently, some parents don’t share the same philosophy. Take for example the Georgia couple that ditched their kids last week, so they could snag Black Friday deals. According to police, instead … Continue reading

Why I Only Spent an Extra $7 Today

In all of the craziness of black friday deals, deals, deals, I confess that I wanted to spend, spend, spend. First there was the Christmas tree. Ours is pretty old and in a very sad state. We thought we might take advantage of the end of the season clearance deals, but by the time the prices got low enough for our budget, the selection was pathetic. So this year, we have been watching the sales and agonizing over the purchase of a shiny new pre-lit Christmas tree. Rather than rushing out to the store right then and there, my husband … Continue reading

What Kind of Parents Take Their Kids Shopping on Black Friday?

Perhaps, I should clarify that title. It should read: “What Kind of Parents Take Their Kids Shopping at Midnight on Black Friday?” Midnight, 4 a.m., 5 a.m.—-where were your kids at those hours? I know where mine weren’t—in line outside of outlet malls that opened at 12 a.m., department stores that opened at 4 a.m. and Wal-Mart, Target, Toys R Us, and the slew of other retailers, which opened their doors to crazed bargain hunters at 5 a.m. Friday morning. Still, if you watched the news tonight I’m sure you saw what I did. Hundreds of adults pushing stroller after … Continue reading

A Little Bit about Black Friday

After cooking for about a dozen people yesterday, I really didn’t feel like getting up and fighting the crowds this morning at 5 am. But, that didn’t stop millions of Americans from taking advantage of Black Friday. Now, to me, Black Friday sounds ominous, a bit like Bloody Sunday (a series of violent events throughout history) or Black Tuesday (the day the stock market crashed in 1929), but actually, it is not a bad thing. Black Friday is the day after Thanksgiving when everyone rushes out to the stores to get great deals – or at least think they get … Continue reading

How Are You Spending the Day After Thanksgiving?

I hope that you enjoyed a good Thanksgiving holiday. How are you spending this day after? For us, we started the day by sleeping in for a bit. We had a lot of sleep to make up, thanks to an emergency room visit and a long Thanksgiving day that ended with a two-hour drive back home. We enjoyed the day, but we all feel tired and a bit achy. Our daughter woke up in her fancy dress, too tired to change when my husband carried her to bed half-asleep in the car. Despite the hot fudge stain on it from … Continue reading

7 Frugal Reasons I Won’t Be Going Shopping on Black Friday (3)

Whether you are home today avoiding the stores as I am, or just returned from you Black Friday shopping trip, I hope that you are having a nice and very frugal day. Personally, I am avoiding it all, the Black Friday shopping and even the Black Friday ads. I don’t want to be tempted to run out for that one special thing that I didn’t know I needed. I have been sharing some of the seven reasons why I won’t be going shopping on Black Friday. If you missed either of those two posts, you can click for them here: … Continue reading

7 Frugal Reasons I Won’t Be Going Shopping on Black Friday (2)

In yesterday’s post, I shared two of the major reasons why shopping on Black Friday isn’t very frugal for me. If you missed that post, you can click here: 7 Frugal Reasons I Won’t Be Going Shopping on Black Friday Now. I’ll share some more reasons that the Black Friday craze could actually cost me money not save me money. 3. The danger of overbuying things on Black Friday is high. We can all get caught up on snagging the deals and “winning” the bargains before everyone else gets a chance. But saving $100 off of a high-end-computer is still … Continue reading

7 Frugal Reasons I Won’t Be Going Shopping on Black Friday

Frugality and Black Friday go hand in hand right? Hmm, not for me. This year (as the years before) I will not be going out to do any shopping, unless it is to pick up a gallon of milk for my eat-me-out-of-house-and-home dependents. In fact, maybe I’ll do all my freezer cooking shopping, since the grocery stores are bound to be empty. While I could give you many reasons to avoid Black Friday shopping from the point of avoiding the stress of long lines and maniac moms with sharp shopping carts, the truth is that I never found Black Friday … Continue reading

Tomorrow is Cyber Monday

While brick and mortar retail stores have Black Friday, online sellers have Cyber Monday. This is their big holiday sale kick-off, and while some sellers started early, you can still get some great bargains. It’s also a great way to tackle Christmas shopping from the comfort of your home. You may also find that with discounted shipping, you’ll spend less than you would after purchasing gasoline to travel from store to store. One great way to find the best bargains is to check out sites like NextTag.com or other similar comparison shopping sites. Click on the category you’re interested in … Continue reading

Other Thoughts on Black Friday

For some, today is not about shopping the biggest sales of the year. Many people will avoid making any purchases because today has also been designated, “Buy Nothing Day,” an event encouraged by AdBusters Magazine (but apparently not MTV). While the spirit of the event seems to make sense, avoiding commercialism, I have to wonder… does it really have an impact on retailers’ bottom lines? It may in fact hurt Friday’s sales, but won’t people simply stock up in advance or by more on Saturday and following days? People are going to buy Christmas presents, decorations, party foods, wrapping paper, … Continue reading
