Diary of an Overweight Mom—Blonde Ambitions

I’m sitting here at my computer with my hair mounded on top of my head in some weird alien-like fashion. I’ve got Light Beige Blonde hair dye on and I’m slowly watching the clock as the minutes tick by. Twenty-five minutes is the magic number, although I usually leave it on for five minutes more, just to be sure. When the timer on my microwave rings, I’ll dive into the shower, rinse off the dye, condition my hair, then blow-dry my new blonde locks—if they turn blonde, that is. Truth is, I should’ve learned my lesson with blonde attempts long … Continue reading

Diary of an Overweight Mom: Sometimes You’ve Got To Bake a Cheesecake

Okay—here’s a thought—making cheesecake is NOT the best idea if you’re trying to avoid calories. But with the holidays and my parents coming into town, all reason was thrown to the wind, and I found myself in the kitchen on Friday making the creamiest cheesecake I could invent. And let me tell you, it was worth it—well, mostly. Let me give you a little information on cheesecake though: That one piece of cheesecake you just have to have; you know, the one that’s so thick and creamy you just can’t resist it? Well that little tiny piece will yield about … Continue reading

Diary of an Overweight Mom: PLEASE Don’t Say it’s the Stomach Flu!

Ah, and yet is WAS the stomach flu. It got my husband first. He went to play basketball on Thursday night and all was well. Then suddenly, as though he was being chased by a band of robbers, he flew in the door and made a beeline for the bathroom. The following morning, just as his sickness was subsiding slightly, my two-year-old threw up on the couch…on the kitchen floor…all over my feet. Both my husband and daughter were down for the count Friday and Saturday. I tried to keep my son out of the house some and prayed he … Continue reading

Diary of an Overweight Mom: Finally—SICK of Macaroni and Cheese

I’ve always loved macaroni and cheese. In fact, we go way back—as far as I can remember. Nothing short of a banana cream pie has tasted so good on my lips as a forkful of creamy macaroni and cheese. But now, well, let’s just say the honeymoon has ended. After being sick for a week and dining solely on fast food or some form of pasta, I’m officially sick of carbohydrates. I feel bulked out, full, and a bit like a linebacker. Thankfully, I didn’t gain weight during my carb-fest, but sometimes weight isn’t the only indication that you need … Continue reading

Diary of an Overweight Mom: Did I Succeed or Did I Fail?

We’re finally home from our weekend in Arizona. The kids had a great time playing in Grandma’s yard and roasting marshmallows at Grandpa’s. As promised, the Thanksgiving table was filled with yummy dishes, and the temptations didn’t stop there. On Friday night we were treated to a barbecue of burgers and bratwurst…and my mom’s delicious potato salad. On Saturday we grilled again at my dad’s and my step-mom made a delicious banana pudding for dessert. BANANA PUDDING…my favorite dessert of all (next to banana cream pie). So you’ve probably guessed that I lost all sense of restraint and dived head … Continue reading

Diary of an Overweight Mom: Is Anyone Losing Weight Now?

I’m curious—who out there is losing weight right now? Who is resisting the temptations of holiday goodies? Who is opting for spiced tea rather than a peppermint mocha with whipped cream? I want to hear from you! I’m still on my cookie strike…mostly. I did eat one today, but that was because I created a recipe (check it out on the food blog) for Honey Granola Cookies With Apricots and I had to try one. But that’s all I tried. Just one. I did not continually make my way back to the kitchen, daring my will power to take over. … Continue reading

Diary of an Overweight Mom: Nobody Said I HAD To Eat The Cookies

It’s true—nobody said I HAD to eat the cookies. Nobody even asked me to eat them. My husband simply brought home the extra cookies (sugar and chocolate chip) from his meeting tonight. But for some unexplainable reason, which both baffles and angers me, I felt drawn to the cookies as though there was a magnet attached to them and to my fingers. I saw the cookies. I walked away from the cookies. Then, by some twist of logic, I found myself making a u-turn and beelining straight for the kitchen. My hand reached out and snatched one. Yum. I walked … Continue reading

Diary Of An Overweight Mom: Don’t MESS With My Cheez-Its

I feel very strongly about my Cheez-Its—so strongly in fact, that I try not to buy them for my kids, because I know I’ll eat the whole box within two days. But yesterday at the store, I relented. I’d been wanting them, and even though we have a gigantic container of Goldfish crackers in the house, they’re just not the same. I think most people prefer one or the other. So today I went to pour the Cheeze-Its into bowls for my kids. I was also looking forward to having some for myself. After all, my stomach has been very … Continue reading

Diary of an Overweight Mom: Stomach Virus HITS

Ugh—just as I committed myself to starting a low-carbohydrate plan, just as I finished my first batch of eggs, it happened. A stomach virus hit, and for two days I was sick as a dog. The good news is I came out of it three pounds lighter. The bad part is I’m back at square one with my healthy eating plan. One of my best friends just started Jenny Craig. I’m happy for her. Having done Jenny Craig myself, I know the food is really tasty. But with a family to cook for, that’s just not an option for me … Continue reading

Diary of an Overweight Mom: I’ve Become THAT Woman

I realized today that I’m THAT person; you know the type—she talks about her weight. She complains about her weight. She jokes about her weight. She resolves to lose the excess weight. She doesn’t lose the weight. Ever. Okay, maybe a pound or two or five here and there but that’s it. I remember in my thin days, when I was 21 and had recently shed about 50 pounds, I worked with a woman who was “that” woman.” She didn’t have much weight to lose, but she always claimed to be on a diet. And she always stayed the same … Continue reading
