First Trip To The ER

Well we are only a few months into being parents and so far we have been called to school for stealing and getting naked by no trips to the emergency room. Well that changed one night when I was home with the boys and my husband was at a concert. I had already fed the boys and we were doing baths, I did George first because he was easy. When I was helping Steve who is only three with his bath first we played with some toys and when it came time to wash his hair he did not want … Continue reading

Tips for Preventing Summer ER Visits

Want to stay out of the emergency room this summer? I know I do. Across the United States, emergency care facilities see nearly a twenty percent jump in traffic during the summer months… and now that I think about it, the majority of my ER visits have been during the summer. Knowing is half the battle… preparation and prevention is the other half. (Sorry, G.I. Joe!) Here are some things you can do to make the summer months safer and healthier. Always drink plenty of water. Dehydration is a huge health issue during the summer months! Always wear sunscreen. Yes, … Continue reading

Adoption in the News this Week: from ER to Madonna to the Hague

Adoption has certainly been in the media this week. As my fellow blogger Michelle has noted in the popular culture blog, Madonna’s petition to adopt a second child from Malawi was denied by a judge in Malawian court. Madonna, who has said she plans to appeal, left the country Sunday without three-year-old Chifundo “Mercy” James, the child she had planned to make her daughter. The judge said she fears that waiving the country’s residency requirements for adoptive parents would open the door to traffickers. Other possible reasons for the different outcome in this case from Madonna’s previous adoption are being … Continue reading

Adoption Plot Alert—ER Series Finale at Earlier Time Tonight

I’m always curious to see how adoption is portrayed in the general media. Last month I talked about an adoption storyline on NBC’s hit medical drama ER. ER (for Emergency Room) is ending its 15-year run tonight in a 2-hour series finale which will air at 9 p.m. in the Pacific and Eastern Time Zones, 8 p.m. Central Time. The finale will be preceded by an “ER Retrospective” show, airing at 8 p.m. in the Pacific and Eastern Time Zones and 7 p.m. Central Time. Angela Bassett plays Dr. Banfield, the tough head of the ER who just began the … Continue reading

Adoption Storyline on “ER”

Once a regular watcher of the NBC drama ER, I’ve gradually cut off almost all television watching. But I may have a reason to start watching ER again—purely for professional reasons, of course. No, I’m not going to medical school. ER is in the middle of an adoption storyline. This season’s new Chief of Emergency Medicine (played by Angela Bassett) and her husband Russell (played by Courtney Vance) have decided to take a chance on loving a child again after the devastating loss of their five-year-old son to a fast-killing leukemia, which we see in flashbacks. Banfield, 40 at the … Continue reading

Jerry Seinfeld and George Clooney Returning to Primetime

I’m not sure which one I am more thrilled about. Jerry, Jerry, Jerry Seinfeld is finally returning to the small screen after more than a decade’s absence. According to reports, the popular comedian turned actor is planning to star in a new sitcom for NBC called The Marriage Ref. In an interview with Variety, the Seinfeld star show will tackle the highs and lows of married life. “This is not a therapy show, it’s a comedy show,” Seinfeld bemused. “After nine years of marriage, I have discovered that the comedic potential of this subject is quite rich.” The series, which … Continue reading

Star News: George Clooney Returns, Marcia Cross Retreats, and Caroline Kennedy Reassesses Plans

It may be the worst kept secret in Hollywood. First he was, then he wasn’t, then he really wasn’t. But, now it appears George Clooney has finally decided that he will in fact grace the set of ER during the show’s farewell season. The hunky star is planning to return to the NBC drama that launched his career, according to sources close to the show. There’s no word on how many episodes the award-winning actor plans to appear in during the show’s final season, though rumor has it that ER co-creator John Wells has ordered a closed set to keep … Continue reading

Thanksgiving in the Emergency Room

We have been very fortunate. Up until this point, neither of my younger children had ever wound up in the emergency room. That all changed on the night before Thanksgiving, when our adventurous two-year-old (his first word after Mama and Dada was “uh-oh”) obtained a gash that required emergency care. It was our fault really. While our older children were sent off to bed, we kept our youngest up while we were finishing up putting the Christmas tree together. It was a way to spend some time with him alone, and finish up our task without the interruption of the … Continue reading

Jen’s Present to Ben and Julianne Margulies’ Gift to Herself

I guess the child Jennifer Garner is carrying is not her Christmas present to her famous hubby Ben Affleck after all. Rather, the National Enquirer is reporting that the actress is designing her poker-playing spouse a gaming suite in their new home. The tabloid claims that Garner surprised Affleck with the plans for the new addition a few months ago. But, perhaps, even more shocking than the fact that Garner paid big bucks to recreate her hubby’s favorite high-roller suite at the Bellagio hotel in Las Vegas (which apparently is his favorite place to play) is the news that the … Continue reading

Why My Husband Didn’t Force Me to Go to the ER

Yesterday I shared why Wayne almost forced me to go to the hospital on Saturday morning. Later in the weekend, he told me what a conundrum he’d been in. As he held me while I bawled because I was alternating between coughing so hard and gasping for breath that I almost passed out, he debated whether he should just sling me over his shoulder, haul me downstairs, toss me in his truck and drive me to the ER. Instead he opted for the bargaining approach. (He feared I’d jump out of the car and get myself killed in traffic if … Continue reading
