Relief Society: Cliques

It is a sad but true fact that there are often cliques in Relief Society. Often I think these form out of not reaching beyond your initial circle of friends. Many times these circles are just of people in the same place in their lives. The moms of the teenagers tend to congregate together, because they want to talk about their teenagers. The young moms with multiple children spend a lot of time together, because their kids like to play together. The newly marrieds and first time moms hang out a lot together as well. While many are friendly, it … Continue reading

Primary Time: Including Everyone

It is important that every child in Primary has a positive experience in Primary. They should be accepted and loved for who they are. It is important that as teachers and leaders that we treat the children fairly. It is also equally important to have the children treat each other with love and respect. We do not want any negative feelings to come as a result of experiences in Primary. Here are five tips to help children feel loved and accepted. 1) Take the time to learn every child’s name. This is really important. Children know if you do not … Continue reading

RS/EQ: Sisters Who Long to be Loved

Today I made a phone call that changed my perspective slightly. I already had a good idea of how I was going to approach my lesson, but after this conversation, I decided to revise the lesson (this a lesson I had pondered and prepared for nearly a month). Let me tell you about the call, and then let me challenge you to find a similar conversation in your ward or branch. Several weeks ago, I overheard a comment that we had ‘given up’ on a sister in our branch. This comment shocked me speechless; if you know me, you’d realize … Continue reading

RS/EQ: Stony Places

Since today was the last day that I was preparing for Sunday’s lesson on being offended, I decided that I should go back to the main point of Elder Bednar’s talk. He specifically addressed it to members who had fallen away or would fallen away due to offense. I couldn’t find ‘inactive’ in the Topical Guide, but there were a lot of scriptures under ‘apostasy of individuals’ that seemed relevant. I think the best section that I found came from Matthew 13. Christ presents the well-known parable of the seeds, and in verses 20 & 21, he addresses the seeds … Continue reading

What Does the Bible Teach us About Good Company? Part 1

The following are some points that I’m sharing based on Biblical scripture about keeping good company (I’ve referenced to chapter and verse after each point for personal study): If someone wants to teach you anything different than Christ has taught us, don’t invite him in your home, don’t encourage him, or you will be taking part in his wickedness. (2 John10) Don’t engage with those who are doing evil or testify on their behalf in a dispute perverting justice. (Exodus 23:2) When we follow the ways that good men do, we are keeping on the path of righteousness. (Proverbs 2:20) … Continue reading

What Does the Bible teach us about Good Company? Part 2

In part one I shared some inspirational points from the Bible on choosing good company. I’m going to continue here with some additional points I have included scripture references for the actual verses: Those who are fearful of a person will find themselves trapped but when we turn to the Lord we can find safety. (Proverbs 29:25) Don’t spend time with anyone who calls themselves a Christian but indulges with sexual sins, is greedy, cheats, is into idolatry, a drunk, or abusive. (1 Corinthians 5:11) We’ll know other Christians by the right things they are doing and the ones who … Continue reading

Don’t Feel Like Going to Church?

It’s Sunday morning, you’re waking up in your nice comfy bed, the house is quiet, kids are still sleeping and this is your last morning to sleep in before the Monday morning work day. You have a mountain of clothes to fold and dishes to do, and the last thing you want to do is get up to make yourself presentable enough to go to church. Many of us, if not most, have been there at one point or another. It’s not always about being disinterested in worshiping God; often it’s about feeling tired, or even a bit lazy. You … Continue reading

Ward Activities

Ward activities can be a lot of fun. Ideally ward activities are supposed to happen once a month. However this might vary according to the circumstances in your ward or branch. Ward activities are a chance for the members to gather together in a less formal setting and fellowship each other. Ward activities encourage friendships to form. They are often really fun, and can include spiritual experiences. Here are some ideas for ward activities. 1) A game night is a really fun activity. You simply have the ward members each bring a few board games. You set up tables to … Continue reading

Adult Bible Studies and Devotionals

Growing up I attended many Bible studies with my parents. These Bible studies consisted of several families who got together every few weeks for a study of a particular book of the Bible. As a younger child I would play with the other children during these gatherings, but as I grew up I started participating in the discussions. As a child I saw these Bible studies as an opportunity to hang out with my friends and nothing more; however, looking back now I appreciate the example that my parents set for me. My parents not only taught me about a … Continue reading
