Friends Helping Friends Through Cancer

When you have a friend or loved one facing a cancer diagnosis you often try to help with things like watch the kids, cook them dinner those types of things that you see may be needed. What most people don’t often think about is the financial aspect of cancer treatments. Even with the best health insurance cancer treatments are very costly. You have test, doctors’ visits, co-payments and the list can go on and on. Let me use my treatment plan for an example; I had good health insurance but to see my primary doctor my co-payment was $25.00 and … Continue reading

Start Your Own Fundraiser

Edward Norton is one of my favorite green celebrities. He raised $1.2 million for the Maasai Wilderness Conservation Trust when he ran in the New York Marathon last fall. He has now set up a web site where you can raise money for your favorite charity as well. Crowdrise is the web site that helps you create your own fundraising page. Crowdrise promises it will take less than a minute – unless you are a slow typer of course. It is actually three simple steps to get started. You enter your personal info, such as name and email, upload a … Continue reading

Race for the Cure – October is Around the Corner

Not really, but with just 4 months to go it’s time to start preparing for the Susan G. Komen Dallas Race for the Cure. Today I received my invitation to sign up for the 2007 Race for the Cure and so now the prepping is on. 5K Run/Walk I’ll be participating in the 5K walk this year. My goal is to do the 3 miles in about 45 minutes. This would 3 15-minute miles. The first mile is the easiest, it’s the next two miles that are tough to match and to measure. My daughter wants to do the walk … Continue reading

Starting A Shelter: Money Stuff

If you’re going to run a shelter, you’re going to need money. Lots of money. Money for the land and building your animals use. Money for dog food and cat chow. Money for advertising your shelter so your resident animals can find homes. Money for veterinary services, grooming, and training. Get the picture? The best thing you can do is find a pet-loving accountant and/or bookkeeper to help you set up an accounting system. You need to document income and expenses — and in categories that make sense for when you’ll be doing this on your own. Otherwise, you’ll be … Continue reading

Hoops for Hearts – A Daughter’s Goals

I talk about my daughter a lot and I talk about the things I do with her and the things she says, but rarely do I get an opportunity to demonstrate so amply the type of person she is becoming. Let me preface this by saying the two schools she’s been in have done fund raisers before. Usually the fund raisers were about raising funds for the school or playground equipment and involved selling some product or other. She never evinced much interest in either of these attempts. A Change in Her Attitude She came home from school two days … Continue reading

Six Creative Fundraising Ideas

Want to help your local shelter? Money is often the one thing shelters need most. Try organizing one of these creative fundraisers… or add an idea of your own to the list! Instead of a car wash, hold a Dog Wash! This is a fun fundraiser for a hot summer day — because everybody’s gonna get wet. Have volunteers help scrub the pups in kiddie pools or large tubs. Hold a pet-themed craft and services fair. Invite local crafters to sell their wares. Local dog walkers, pet sitters, groomers, pet photographers, and others can set up displays to drum up … Continue reading

Ten Ways To Help Your Shelter

Maybe your schedule doesn’t give you the time to volunteer every week. Maybe you don’t feel comfortable talking to potential adopters. Breast Cancer Awareness – Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure

The first Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation Race for the Cure took place in 1983. I was just 11 years old that year and I remember hearing about it. This year, I plan to participate in the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation Race for the Cure at one of the local races in Dallas. It will be late October, and I’m only planning to walk the 1k. I will likely take my daughter with me to enjoy the walk, side by side and hand in hand. The Race for the Cure is about more than just raising funds. … Continue reading

Putting the Fun Back into FUNdraising

It’s fall, school is back in and it’s time to start the fundraising efforts that PTA’s launch every year in an effort to raise funds for the school. When I was a kid, I didn’t pay much attention to the fundraising efforts beyond what prizes could be won. My daughter was thinking in a somewhat similar vein when she brought home her fund raising package on Friday. But I thought about it over the weekend and last night, she and I sat down to discuss the FUNdraising that needed to be done and why it needed to be. I asked … Continue reading

Comic Relief Returns

If you have been missing Comic Relief, you will be glad to know it is returning! The three original comedian hosts – Billy Crystal, Whoopi Goldberg, and Robin Williams – will return on November 18th to resurrect their fundraising comedy concert. This is the first time in almost eight years the three have gotten together and this time, the money will go to victims of Hurricane Katrina, including both humans and the animals displaced because of the storm. Due to many factors including lack of housing and jobs, a year after the storm, the New Orleans population is estimated to … Continue reading
