Movies Week in Review – May 26th – 31st

Looking for something fun to watch? Maybe one of these movies will fit your mood. “Anchors Aweigh” is a song-and-dance movie starring Gene Kelly and Frank Sinatra as two sailors aboard a submarine. After performing a heroic act, they are rewarded with four days of shore leave in California, and head off to pursue something beautiful that wears a skirt. However, their plans are sidetracked by a little boy who wants to run away to join the Navy. They take him home and meet Aunt Susie, the lovely and talented Kathryn Grayson, and help her attain an audition with conductor … Continue reading

Xanadu (1980)

I’m so confused. If anyone can explain to me what the gods on Mount Olympus care about roller rinks, I’d be so grateful. In the cult favorite “Xanadu,” we meet Sonny Malone, an artist who works taking album covers and painting them extra large for advertisement purposes. He wants to create something more out of his life but doesn’t know how to break out of the rut he’s in. While out wandering around one day, trying to figure out his life, a beautiful woman roller skates up to him, kisses him, then skates off. When he’s given the assignment to … Continue reading

Les Girls (1957)

This fun movie tells the story of three showgirls who work together in Barry Nichols’ theater in Paris. It’s been a few years since the act broke up, and one of the girls, Sybil, has written her life story and had it published. Angele, the second of the three girls, is suing her for slander. Sybil claims that Angele tried to kill herself, and Angele insists that she did not. We see what happened from Sybil’s perspective as the movie goes into flashback while Sybil is on the stand. Barry Nichols (Gene Kelly) is a handsome rogue who enjoys flirting … Continue reading

Marjorie Morningstar (1958)

Those of you who follow my reviews know what a big Gene Kelly fan I am, but not for “Marjorie Morningstar.” Our main character is Marjorie Morgenstern (Natalie Wood) the oldest daughter of doting Jewish parents who have raised her with high moral beliefs. She is being courted by a young man named Sandy who wants to marry her, but she wants to experience a … Continue reading
