Home Teaching Families with Young Children

Home teaching families with young children can be an extra challenge. When visitors come children often feel the need to show off, and they respond by being wild and crazy. Parents may have a difficult time getting the children to sit still, and may be reluctant to use time out since it disrupts the lesson and the meeting in general. For these reasons it is important to plan your lesson specifically with the children in mind. First you should make the lesson and visit shorter than you normally would. Children’s attention spans are not as long, and you should keep … Continue reading

First Presidency Message: Be One

Our First Presidency Message for the month of September comes to us from the inspired mind of President Henry B. Eyring and is entitled, “Be One.” He begins his counsel by reminding us of Christ’s admonition to the members of the Church that we should be one, and that if we are not one, we are not His. He likens this to marriage and quotes the scripture that speaks of a man and a woman leaving their homes and cleaving unto each other, becoming one as husband and wife. This commandment is not meant for this life alone, but is … Continue reading

Home Teaching: Beyond the Lessons

Home teaching is an important program in the church. It serves many purposes. One of the most important things it does is provide a support system to the families in the ward. If there is a single mother or an older widow, the home teachers may be needed to help with more tasks. It is important that everyone works together to support and bolster the home teaching program. Here are some duties that will extend beyond visiting and teaching the lessons each month. Home teachers should be available to assist in priesthood blessings when needed. This should be the first … Continue reading

When Disaster Strikes

One great aspect of being a member of the church is the way that the ward gathers together when disaster strikes. This can be a small disaster that affects just one member or a larger disaster that affects the entire ward or stake. It is great because the entire ward works together to provide the help that is needed. Additionally wards and stakes will reach out to help neighboring areas when it comes to disaster relief and clean up. We also do not limit our help to just those who are members of the church. The home teaching and visiting … Continue reading

Home Teaching

The home teaching program is a wonderful blessing to the members of the church. It blesses those in need, and it gives others a chance to serve. It helps to build relationships between the different families in the ward. It also helps to address the needs of each family in the ward. Every member is assigned a set of home teachers. Home teachers should come and visit with your family once a month. They will provide a short message, which is usually based on the home teaching message in each month’s “Ensign.” Home teachers are also available to come in … Continue reading

First Presidency Message: Inspirational Thoughts from President Hinckley

This month’s First Presidency message was available online yesterday, February first. I encourage you to head over and look at it. And if looking is too difficult, the church has allowed us the option of listening to both the home and visiting teaching message. Since the layout of the website has changed, I’ll let you know that both messages are in the upper lefthand corner, under the picture of President Hinckley. President Hinckley, by the way, prepared the home teaching message for the month. Rather than a full-length article, it is a combination of inspirational thoughts taken from various addresses … Continue reading

Teaching, No Greater Call

Although I’m filing this blog under ‘callings’, I hope that everyone will take a few minutes to read it. Though we might not be officially called to teach in the church, every member plays a teaching role to some degree, and I hope that my thoughts will help readers to recognize the importance of that role. Because of the lay nature of our church, teaching is a distinct possibility for pretty much everyone who shows up. We may be called to the Primary, or to teach the youth. Perhaps the bishopric has asked us to teach long-standing members in Gospel … Continue reading

Young Men: Becoming Home Teachers

Once your son becomes a teacher he will be assigned to be a home teacher. This is a great responsibility and an opportunity for your son to grow and become accustomed to teaching the gospel to others. Often your son’s first companion will be his father. This is not always the case however. No matter who it is, it is a wonderful opportunity for your son. You can help him to begin to fulfill his duty in many ways. 1) It is encouraged that home teachers teach in Sunday dress. This is not always possible, and there may be homes … Continue reading
