The U.S. Humane Society vs. McDonald’s

Usually, I write about PETA taking on some company for violation of animal rights. This time, it is the U.S. Humane Society (USHS) and McDonald’s engaging in a cage match – literally. The USHS asked McDonald’s to raise 5% of its egg-producing hens outside of battery cages. Right now, six to eight hens are confined in a cage in which each hen just 72 square inches, which means space that is smaller than the size of a 8 ½ x 11 piece of paper. The USHS pointed out that while cage-free isn’t cruelty-free, the hens do “generally have better lives.” … Continue reading

More Puppy Mill Busts in the News

The Humane Society of the United States has been working with state and local officials to cut away at the nationwide network of puppy mills. Animal control officials in Independence, Virginia, sized twenty puppies from a suspected puppy mill. The officer in charge of the seizure said that the conditions were deplorable — puppies were malnourished and suffering from parasites. Another suspected puppy mill in Honey Brook, Pennsylvania lost twenty-four dogs to a local SPCA shelter. Workers suspected that there had been more dogs at the puppy mill, but that they had been removed before the raid. The dogs who … Continue reading

Puppy Mill Bust in Virginia

Hillsville, Virginia was declared a disaster area in early November. Why? County officials had seized more than a thousand dogs from a mass breeding farm (also known as a puppy mill) on November 2nd. The initial count went up after a few more litters were delivered, leaving Carroll County, Virginia with more than 1100 dogs on their hands. The Humane Society of the United States spent five months working undercover at Horton’s Pups before asking county animal control officers to take action. The breeding farm is thought to be the largest puppy mill ever. The operation sold purebred dogs to … Continue reading

What Is A Problem Shelter?

Running an animal shelter or humane society is no easy task! Most of them are staffed with caring, dedicated people who have the animals’ best interests at heart. However, a time may come when you are concerned with the way your local shelter is being run. The best thing you can do first is document problems. If you can, keep track of time, place, and specific issue. Once you have your documented issues, you can talk to the shelter staff and management about your issues. There may be a very good reason for a problem to exist — animal care … Continue reading

Hurricane Hero Dog

During all the coverage of Hurricane Katrina, I happened to miss this story: a black lab saved a man from drowning in flooded New Orleans. The dog, now called Katrina, helped pull the drowning man to higher ground. He gives her full credit for saving his life. The story came out from Los Angeles based station KCAL when the rescued man told the tale of his amazing rescue. After the broadcast, the station sent a team back to New Orleans to rescue Katrina. Katrina got a standing ovation on Saturday March 18th at the annual Genesis Awards, from the Humane … Continue reading

Establishing a Support System #5 Adoption Finalization and Other Legal Issues.

It is so exciting when adoptive families finally have the official adoption decree. At last what we have worked so long and hard for is completed and our child is our child forever and ever. Many families are so happy to reach this milestone they miss an opportunity to take care of a variety of other legal issues they might have been able to accomplish in one shot with the same attorney.
