Learning from Joshua

Joshua is one of my favorite characters in the bible, because of his unwavering trust in and obedience to God. We might ask, ‘How can this story of Joshua help us in our lives right now?’ Here are some thoughts from Joshua chapter 1. In Joshua 1:1 we see that it is after the death of Moses that God commissioned Joshua. But God had been preparing him before that. How Soon We Forget!

How soon we can forget the way God acts in our lives! This is one of the advantages of keeping a journal. For years I’ve been a huge fan of journals for quiet times, probably way back since I read ‘A Man Called Peter,’ by Catherine Marshall. Obedience – the Stories of Samson and Joshua

Samson is one of the heroes of the Bible. He made a covenant with God that he would abide by the commandments, and as a token of this covenant, he promised God that he would never cut his hair. He grew to be mighty and strong, and everyone wondered what was the power behind his strength. Be Strong and Courageous

The book of Joshua is probably most well-known for a statement by Joshua in chapter 24 verse 15: “But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.” However, I want to focus on a different concept from the book of Joshua which is repeated several times throughout the book: “Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.” (Joshua 1:9) Joshua needed to be strong and courageous because he was about to lead the people as they entered the promised land.
