Seven More States Gain Approval for Exchanges

California was not the only state to gain approval for its health insurance exchange today. There were seven other states who also got their exchanges approved by the federal government. This brings the total up to 20! The Affordable Care Act is great big health reform law that has many parts. One requirement is that all states will have a health insurance exchange that is functional and accessible by January 1, 2014. Although the Affordable Care Act was signed in 2010, it is only recently that some states have completed the appropriate work involved to have their exchanges approved by … Continue reading

More Ski Resorts with Bonus Amenities

In my previous blog I touched on an issue many large families deal with when deciding where to take the entire clan on vacation–—finding a spot where everyone’s needs are met. It’s not always an easy task, especially in the winter when half your family might be dreaming of jetting off to a tropical locale while the other half is looking forward to shooshing down the slopes on fresh powder. If you have been reading my blogs on a regular basis then you know that a number of ski resorts are offering outstanding deals this month and next. If you … Continue reading

Seasons Greetings from Santa Fe

Yesterday I received a Christmas card from a friend bearing that exact greeting. Little did she know that her holiday correspondence would serve as inspiration for a travel blog. As I stared at the card and the photos she included inside it made me wonder how much people know about New Mexico’s state capital. Sure, its popular ski resorts get a lot of press, but what about the other attractions the sunny city has to offer? If you have never visited Santa Fe then you might not know that it averages 300 days of sunshine a year, which means that … Continue reading

Controversial Tourism Commercial Creates Drama in New Mexico

I’ll admit the first time I saw the state funded commercials aimed at attracting travelers to New Mexico I laughed—a lot. The 30-second ads feature creepy looking reptilian spacemen dressed like tourists with the tag line “New Mexico—-the best place in the Universe.” Anyone who knows anything about the state realizes the campaign pokes fun at New Mexico’s famous connection to aliens. Most notably the fact that in 1947 the U.S. military said a weather balloon crashed in a Roswell desert, but the overwhelming consensus by residents (both past and present) is that it was a UFO. Since then the … Continue reading

Seasonal Travel: Spending Thanksgiving in New Mexico

My parents met and married in Albuquerque, New Mexico and subsequently spent a number of Thanksgivings in the land of hot air balloons and roasted chilies. They now live in the land of pineapples and big surf. Hawaii is a popular holiday destination, but you’d be surprised at how many visitors descend on New Mexico during the long Thanksgiving weekend. Many hotels and resorts in the area are offering Thanksgiving packages, which include elaborate turkey spreads, but it is New Mexico, so don’t be surprised if your meal features a Southwestern accent. Common holiday dishes such as green chili and … Continue reading

Fall Festivals From Coast to Coast

For the past week our weather has been down right chilly—daytime highs in the 60s and frost advisories at night. So, yesterday, I spent more than two hours packing away our summer gear and unloading our winter wardrobe from storage. Today, I learned that next week’s highs are supposed to top 85 degrees. Wonderful! That’s what I get for listening to the weather guy too early in the week. A string of warm days aside fall is definitely on its way and with the change of seasons comes a host of family friendly outdoor festivals that highlight the beautiful autumn … Continue reading

Marriage Laws – New Mexico & Colorado

Continuing our exploration of state marriage laws takes us to New Mexico and Colorado. The beauty in these two states makes them ideal for destination weddings (though truth be told, every state we’ve looked at so far seems to have a great reason to call themselves a destination wedding spot. So let’s take a look at New Mexico and Colorado. New Mexico When you think of New Mexico, do you think of a beautiful desert state? You wouldn’t be alone in that. Travel Tidbits—Weddings and Honeymoons

The upcoming wedding season certainly isn’t lost on the travel industry… especially those who work in hotel marketing. By now I’m sure you have either heard of (or attended, or had) a destination wedding. You know, it’s when a couple decides to fly off to some sunny locale to get hitched. Destinations weddings with all the bells and whistles are huge these days, but here’s a hotel package that you may not be familiar with: the elopement package. If you are interested in walking down the aisle without hundreds of guests watching you do so, consider heading to Santa Fe, … Continue reading
