PETA Upset Over Dead Mice

The other day, I read that the government was going to drop dead mice from helicopters over Guam.  It sounded crazy, but there was a good reason.  Officials are using the mice to get rid of an estimated two million brown tree snakes. The snakes have overtaken the territory, causing damage to both the economy and environment.  The snakes have almost depleted Guam’s native bird species.  This lack of birds causes a frightening (at least to me) side effect – the island now has 40 times more spiders than surrounding islands.  Needless to say, all the spiders and snakes have … Continue reading

Chimpanzee Testing to Resume?

A chimpanzee at work for NASA Animal testing is a tricky issue. Given my love for animals I’d normally think I’d come down firmly against it, but it’s not that easy. For a while I worked for a medical journal, specifically, an immunology journal. Immunologists are the ones who research and cure diseases. Although it was hard to read over the studies in which they used animals for testing, their findings were always applied to fighting terrible diseases. But none of that is the case here. The Huffington Post published an article on August 23 examining the plight of more … Continue reading

PETA’s Sexiest Vegetarian Celebrities

Voting for PETA’s Sexiest Vegetarian Celebrities of 2010 is still open. I read on Facebook that octogenarian Cloris Leachman, apparently not to be outdone by that minx Betty White, is currently one of the forerunners in the contest. Who will 2010’s winners join as sexy vegetarian celebrities? Newly single Shania Twain won in 2001, the first year the contest was held. Shania said she became vegetarian when she married her ex, Mutt Lange. At least she took something good away from the marriage. In 2002, PETA decided to have a sexiest male and female vegetarian celebrity. The male honors went … Continue reading

PETA Takes on Kim Kardashian, Resurrects Bea Authur

While the Humane Society is busy trying to get McDonald’s to use cage-free hen raising practices, PETA is continuing to fight other battles. The battle this week is with reality star Kim Kardashian. No, Kim didn’t wear fur or eat meat, but she did abuse a kitten, according to PETA. Kardashian posted a photo of herself holding a kitten by the scruff of the neck. Now, a lot of people think this is perfectly acceptable (my husband being one – I personally don’t do it) because after all, mama cats carry their babies this way. But, mama cats don’t have … Continue reading

The U.S. Humane Society vs. McDonald’s

Usually, I write about PETA taking on some company for violation of animal rights. This time, it is the U.S. Humane Society (USHS) and McDonald’s engaging in a cage match – literally. The USHS asked McDonald’s to raise 5% of its egg-producing hens outside of battery cages. Right now, six to eight hens are confined in a cage in which each hen just 72 square inches, which means space that is smaller than the size of a 8 ½ x 11 piece of paper. The USHS pointed out that while cage-free isn’t cruelty-free, the hens do “generally have better lives.” … Continue reading

PETA Supports Pamela Anderson; Goes After Ringling Bros. Circus Again

If you watched the first elimination show of this season’s “Dancing with the Stars,” you may have been surprised to see Pamela Anderson in the bottom two. While I admit her dancing was a bit more risqué than the other dancers, I certainly didn’t think she deserved to be on the bottom, especially with people like Buzz Aldrin (who has since been eliminated) and Kate Gosselin still in the competition. Now it seems as if Pamela may have a savior in PETA. The actress, who has been a long time supporter of the animal rights organization, is now reportedly receiving … Continue reading

Alternatives to Plastic Easter Eggs – Part 2

Yesterday, I talked about alternatives for plastic Easter eggs. Like many other things that can be bad for the environment, we have gotten used to the convenience of plastic eggs, but there are great (and fun to make!) alternatives. PETA lists a recipe on their web page for making Clay Easter eggs. All that is needed for this recipe is cornstarch, water, and baking soda. Combine one cup of cornstarch, 1 1/4 cups of cold water, and 2 cups of baking soda and stir in a saucepan over medium heat for 4 minutes. Once the mixture looks like mashed potatoes, … Continue reading

SeaWorld Trainer Killed by Killer Whale

Many people see animal compassion as a big part of green living. Some chose to be vegetarians, some choose to not wear products made from animals, and some fight for animal rights, which can include cracking down on animal brutality, animal testing, and the captivity of wild animals. Yesterday, a SeaWorld trainer was killed by a killer whale named Tillikum in Orlando, Fla. It is not known how the trainer ended up in the tank. Some say she was pulled in by the whale and some say she fell in in what appears to be an accident. What is known … Continue reading

To Fur or Not to Fur – Kanye West

The other day, I blogged about Olympian Johnny Weir, his love of fur, and PETA’s outcry against it. But, Johnny is not the only one in trouble with PETA for fur. Earlier this year, PETA announced its yearly Worst Dressed Celebrities list. Now this list has less to do with fashion and more to do with use of real fur in clothing. Topping the list was Madonna. She was quickly followed by the Olsen Twins, Maggie Gyllenhaal, and Kanye West. Rounding out the list was Elizabeth Hurley. While I am sure Johnny will make next year’s list, the only male … Continue reading

Ringling Bros. Fires Back at PETA

Yesterday, I blogged about PETA releasing photos and videos that reportedly showed mistreatment of baby elephants by Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus employees. PETA has also been protesting at elementary schools before the circus comes to town, trying to encourage students and parents to stay away. It took an Ellie mascot with a bloody bandage to August Circle Elementary in Greenville, So. Carolina in early February. Ellie handed out activity books and talked to the children about Ringling Bros. treatment of its elephants. Ellie has also appeared at elementary schools in Nashville, Tenn., Tallahassee, Fla., Orlando, Fla., Fort … Continue reading
