Pop Culture Potpourri: “Sex and the City” Turns Back the Clock and Croc Hunter’s Mini Me

Have you ever wondered what Carrie Bradshaw was like as a teen? (And I’m not talking about Sarah Jessica Parker’s stint on TV’s Square Pegs.) Sex and the City is going back in time thanks to creator Candace Bushnell. The author recently announced that she is writing a series of literary prequels featuring her most famous character, Carrie Bradshaw. The pair of teen novels will reportedly focus on the high school adventures of Bradshaw, (who was portrayed by Sarah Jessica Parker on the big and small screen) and be named The Carrie Diaries. Bushnell says that she is concentrating on … Continue reading

It’s Not Barbie, It’s Bindi

She claims she doesn’t play with Barbie dolls, but perhaps she’ll make room on her shelf for her look-alike. Bindi Irwin is a doll. Really. The Emmy-winning daughter of the late “Crocodile Hunter” Steve Irwin can now sit in your child’s bedroom. Well, at least a 10-inch version of the spunky tyke can. Wild Republic, a division of K&M International Inc., based in Ohio, just announced it is developing two different Bindi dolls. The first Bindi Irwin doll sports khakis, puffy pigtails and hiking boots, and comes with binoculars, a camera and other outback gear, as well as a cockatoo, … Continue reading

Crocodile Hunter’s Dad Gets the Boot from Son’s Zoo

Can’t we all just get along? There is a major disturbance going on in the Australian zoo created by the late Steve “Crocodile Hunter” Irwin… only it doesn’t involve feisty animals. According to Australian TV reports, Irwin’s father, Bob, said he quit the family’s Australian conservation park because he had become a “disrupting influence.” That’s his story anyway. The Australian media have their own take on what really went down behind the zoo’s gates. Rumor has it Terri Irwin, Steve’s wife and mother of his two children, had fallen out with Bob Irwin following his son’s death in a 2006 … Continue reading

Croc Hunter’s Son Attacked by a Snake and Ledger’s Replacements Announced

Since “Crocodile Hunter” Steve Irwin’s tragic death in 2006, the conservationist’s 9-year-old daughter Bindi has replaced him in the media spotlight. That is until his 4-year-old son got bit by a snake. Irwin’s son Bob made headlines recently after he sustained a wound from a baby boa constrictor. According to Irwin’s widow, Terri, the snake bit her son’s finger, but it was not venomous and the boy is doing well. So well in fact that he was able to join his sister and his mom at a media event to promote a new line of toys. While there Terri Irwin … Continue reading

The Crocodile Hunter’s Family Speaks out Against Whaling

The family of the late Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin — wife Terri and daughter Bindi — are making 2008 their year for a campaign against Japanese whaling. After Steve Irwin’s death in 2007, Terri Irwin purchased a whale watching business. That whale watching business will help launch the Irwin family’s anti-whaling project. Terri’s goal is to demonstrate that whale research can be done without killing — Japanese whalers continue to hunt and kill humpbacks in the name of science. Whale data gathered by Irwin’s whale watching business in the southern hemisphere will be analyzed at Oregon State University. Japan has … Continue reading

Steve Irwin—-The Ship

It’s been more than a year since “Crocodile Hunter” Steve Irwin died from a stingray attack off Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, but his legacy is being kept afloat in a unique way. A conservation group just renamed one of its ships the “Steve Irwin.” The newly named vessel will form the backbone of the U.S.-based Sea Shepherd Conservation Society’s Antarctic mission. Group leaders say they plan to use the ship to disrupt Japan’s annual whale hunt, and they are sure the late environmental activist wouldn’t want it any other way. With the support of Irwin’s widow, Terri, the group rededicated … Continue reading

Dress Your Kids Like A Crocodile Hunter

Tuesday marks the first anniversary of “Crocodile Hunter” Steve Irwin’s tragic death off the Great Barrier Reef. You’ll recall the animal activist was killed when a stingray barb pierced his chest while he was taping a segment for his wildlife show. In the months since Irwin’s death, his 9-year-old daughter Bindi has made headlines picking up where he left off. Proving that the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree Irwin’s daughter has morphed into “Bindi the Jungle Girl” and now stars in a TV show bearing the same title. “Jungle Girl” Bindi lives in a tree house and hangs … Continue reading

Celebrity Babies and Birthdays

I was fortunate enough to meet her the day after she won a gold medal at the 1996 Summer Olympic Games in Atlanta, though I didn’t get invited to her wedding. Still, I am thrilled to spread the good news that gymnast Dominique Moceanu and her husband Dr. Michael Canales will be welcoming their first child in January. Currently, 25-year-old Moceanu is living in Cleveland with her foot and ankle surgeon husband and teaching gymnastics to girls who weren’t even born when she and the rest of her “Magnificent 7” teammates struck gold in Atlanta. Gymnastics may have been a … Continue reading

Celebrity Props

He may be gone, but Steve “Crocodile Hunter” Irwin is far from being forgotten in his home country. The dedicated environmentalist, who was killed in a stingray attack last year, will be honored with a new wildlife reserve in Australia. According to government officials, a 333,585-acre chunk of land located in the far northern portion of Irwin’s home state of Queensland will be named after the popular television host and managed by his family (including his chip-off-the-block daughter, Bindi). The area currently houses a number of endangered species including the northern quoll, a carnivorous marsupial, and the speartooth shark. (Irwin, … Continue reading

Can Animal Planet Scare Your Pet?

Are you the kind of pet parent who leaves Animal Planet on when you’re away from home? I have a lot of pet parent friends who do this. It makes sense. Animal Planet…animals are featured…pets should like this. Right? But what if it scares them? A little while back I watched Bailey, a neighbor’s dog, for a day. It wasn’t an overnight thing; all I had to do was stop over for a couple of pee-break visits and such. So she wouldn’t get too lonely in the interim, her mom left Animal Planet on for her. During my last visit … Continue reading
