Original Superman Comic Book Goes on the Auction Block

If you are a comic book fan like my husband, you may be drooling as you read this blog. Starting today, fans, at least those with a lot of money, will be able to start bidding on an unrestored copy of the “Superman and Friends” No. 1 comic book. (This image is in the public domain because it was published in the United States between 1923 and 1963 with a copyright notice, and its copyright was not renewed.) There are about 100 existing copies of the comic that was first released in June 1938 for 10 cents. However, most of … Continue reading

The man who is being hailed as a “genius” for his work crafting the summer blockbuster “Wanted” (starring Angelina Jolie and James McAvoy) is not resting on his laurels. “Wanted” brought him box office glory and now Mark Millar wants to use his success to bring a boyhood dream to fruition. In a recent interview with British reporters Millar revealed that he always wanted to reinvent … Continue reading

Superman in Hollywoodland

I’ve mentioned before what a big part of pop culture the Superman character is. But even those who play Superman seem to make the news, whether it is good or bad. Some actors who play the Man of Steel get typecast as Superman. Such was the plight of George Reeves, who played Superman on the television show during the 1950s. There was so much controversy around his death that almost 50 years later, there is a new movie coming about it called Hollywoodland, starring Ben Affleck as Reeves. If you don’t know the story behind the man that will always … Continue reading

Superman: The Movie: A Classic That Deserves a Renaissance

There is a memory from my childhood that I always recall with fondness. The memory involved the television premiere of Superman: The Movie and as the film began and those now famous credits began to flash forward on the screen, I couldn’t contain my excitement. It goes without saying that, within Superman: The Movie, Christopher Reeve defined the role of The Man of Steel. Take a look at Brandon Routh’s performance as Superman and you will very clearly see the shades of Reeve’s performance that tint Routh’s. And with good reason, Christopher Reeve redefined the role from the campy portrayal … Continue reading

Five Reasons to Love Brandon Routh – The New Superman

In case you have not heard, there is a new Superman in town. Over the years, several actors have played the beloved character. After starring in the television series “Adventure of Superman” in the Fifties, actor George Reeves found himself typecast as the Superman character, losing many acting jobs due to that fact. Christopher Reeve found fame playing Superman, starring as the Man of Steel in 1978’s blockbuster hit “Superman.” Handsome actor Dean Cain played Superman for four years on the small screen in “Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman.” The first new Superman movie in almost 25 … Continue reading

Superman Returns or Yes, Lois: The World Really Does Need Superman

Again, I must preface this review by saying that, normally, Families.com tries to focus on films with a rating of G-PG. However, this is Superman and as a child raised on the Christopher Reeve films, I find it hard to believe there won’t be a number of parents taking their children to see Superman’s latest film adventure. Before I get into this review, I’m going to go ahead and admit that I was worried. I was afraid that, somehow, this new film would trample my childhood memories of the superhero I held so dear. My first crush was Christopher Reeve … Continue reading

Superman Returns-With A Twist

Today across the nation the newest Superman film titled “Superman Returns” is being released in theatres. I used to enjoy the Superman movies of the late 70’s and early 80’s with Christopher Reeve playing Superman. From the trailers that I have seen, the new flick looks very edgy and entertaining. So what does Superman have to do with single parenting? Interestingly, Hollywood in all of its wisdom has decided to cast Lois Lane (played by Kate Bosworth)-Superman’s former love interest as a single mother. I have not seen the movie yet, but the premise is that Superman has left earth … Continue reading
