Unique Father’s Day Travel Gift Ideas

Do you know Father’s Day was started? Apparently, back in the early 1900s a young woman named Sonora Smart Dodd was inspired to honor her dad in much the same way she did her mom each year on Mother’s Day. The idea of giving dads a day of their own caught on, but it took until 1956 for the occasion to be officially recognized by a joint resolution of Congress, and wasn’t until 1972 that President Nixon made it official. If the idea of paying tribute to your dad with yet another tie just doesn’t sit well with you this … Continue reading

Interview with Bobby Mercer – Part Two

On Sunday, we visited with Bobby Mercer, author of Quarterback Dad. Today, Bobby joins us again with ideas for celebrating Father’s Day. One laugh out loud moment for me in the QB Dad book was that you wanted a football party for your daughter’s first birthday. Did you really buy supplies? Sure did, I have one entire kitchen cabinet full of football party trays, plates, cups, snack bowls, etc. That makes it easy for me to host the Super Bowl party every year. How are you celebrating Father’s Day? and/or Do you have good ideas for celebrating Father’s Day? We … Continue reading

Donuts with Dad

During the last week of my daughter’s school, her kindergarten teacher organized an event called “Donuts with Dad.” My wife had attended “Muffins with Mom” about two weeks earlier, so the pressure was on dad to come through. It was a busy week for me. I was starting a new time job, not to mention I still had to maintain all of the other appointments and activities for my family. Consequently, when I heard about this new activity with her kindergarten class I was not too excited about going at first – until I got there. When I arrived at … Continue reading

Father’s Day, 2008

It’s that special time of year again when dads look forward to all the unique and wonderful gifts that they will receive. Everything from ties to power tools is on the menu. One of the best gifts I ever received was a 12-string guitar. I used to joke with my wife all the time about getting one for my anniversary present. My wife and son went in on this together and purchased it online. I tried to think back to what I used to give my dad for Father’s Day. Nothing really stands out in my mind. Today we mostly … Continue reading

Father’s Day Photo Gift Ideas

Years ago when I was working at a local TV station one of the meteorologists showed up the day after Father’s Day proudly sporting the gift he received from his two young daughters—a silk screen tie featuring a picture of them sitting in a tree. Yes, he wore it on the air, and yes, I’m sure it delighted his daughters tremendously. At the time I couldn’t help but think of the millions of other dads, who while grateful for the thought put into the gift, would never have done the same thing. To each his own I guess. The important … Continue reading

What Annoys Me About Mother’s Day

What annoys me about Mother’s Day is, first and foremost, the way it has been taken over by commercialism. TVs and catalogues run ads like ‘buy Mom a diamond ring or pendant, a washing machine,’ etc – the assumption being that the more money is spent on the gift, the more we value Mom. Rubbish! Two of my most treasured gifts are 3 paperbacks and a hand made bracelet. My son made the bracelet of red, white and green clay around thirty years ago. Like his mother he’s not the most adept person when it comes to crafts, so anything … Continue reading
