Tooth Fairy Economics

Punxsutawney Phil may be the groundhog that lets us know, on Groundhog Day, whether we can expect an early spring or just more winter, but apparently the Tooth Fairy is the one to watch when it comes to the country’s economics. Analysts take a look at how much the Tooth Fairy is giving out per tooth these days, and how it relates to the state of the economy. In other words, the more generous the Tooth Fairy is, the better the economy. In our house, compared to some, the Tooth Fairy is walking around in the same dress she had … Continue reading

Of Mice, Teeth, and Fairies

The magical day has arrived… Happy Halloween to those who are dressing up and celebrating today! I’m taking a break from putting the finishing touches on my costume to give some thought to the Tooth Fairy. Why? Because that’s what I’m going to be for Halloween! For many people, teeth are a milestone. When are the baby teeth coming in? When are the baby teeth falling out, to be replaced by adult teeth? The change from infant to child to adolescent can be measured in our teeth. In the days when superstition was strong, teeth falling out could be bad … Continue reading

Tooth Fairy Generous Despite the Economy

Practically everyone is looking toward frugal living in order to deal with the serious issues in our current economy. One entity, however, that is not tightening her belt is the tooth fairy. Should the Tooth Fairy be more frugal or is her generosity in fact related to the recession? According to Medical News Today, the average price of a tooth left under a pillow has actually increased from 2006 to 2007 by 22 percent. The survey, the Tooth Fairy PollSM was conducted by Securian Dental plans, shows that Tooth Fairy gifts varied widely, from five cents all the way up … Continue reading

Bad Economy + Tooth Fairy = Unhappy Kids

How much money does the Tooth Fairy leave at your house? My brothers and I used to get 25 cents per tooth, but in the decades since our teeth fell out it appears the Tooth Fairy has adjusted her rates and is now paying out a pretty penny (in the form of 5 and 10 dollar bills) for baby teeth. Evidently, the days when the Tooth Fairy could get away with leaving a couple coins and a pack of Trident gum are long gone. Our neighbor’s 6-year-old son ran over to our home yesterday flashing a new toothless grin and … Continue reading

How Much is the Tooth Fairy Laying Out These Days?

When I was losing my baby teeth, way back in those dark ages, it was a dime a tooth that I found when I turned them over. With my own children, if I remember correctly (and it was a little while ago too) it was a dollar a tooth. Although for the big molars I think the tooth fairy left $1.50 or, in the case of my middle daughter, she often wanted a toy or book instead of money—she just was never that into money when she was younger. Now that our tooth fairy days are done, I’m a little … Continue reading

Keeping Baby Teeth

Here at the Romans family home, we have been experiencing a new milestone. My first born is now old enough to start losing his teeth. This has been an exciting time here. The bottom two teeth are now gone, off in tooth fairy land, traded for two shiny gold dollar coins. But it has me wondering, is it worth storing those baby teeth for years to come? I admit that I am torn. My husband thinks that it is pretty gross to save these teeth. This was said by the man who religiously kept almost every bloody band aid from … Continue reading

Yes Son, I Am The Tooth Fairy

In a previous blog, I wrote about my efforts to keep my tooth fairy identity a secret. Tyler has been losing his baby teeth over the past few months and had asked me if I was, in fact, the tooth fairy. I told him that I wasn’t and he believed me but I knew it was just a matter of time before I would have to tell him the truth. That time came on Thursday. For over a week, he had a loose front tooth and on Wednesday, it finally popped out. When he went to bed Wednesday night he … Continue reading

Mama, Are You the Tooth Fairy?

Tyler lost a tooth Sunday and another one is anxiously waiting its turn. When the second tooth pops out, he will have lost four altogether. Tyler decided that he would stay up and catch the tooth fairy. He was quite serious about it, too. He noticed the teeth were wiggling Saturday and when I checked, I was certain that one or both would come out over the weekend. Bright and early Sunday morning the first one came out when he brushed his teeth. When his first teeth came out several months ago, a few days later he asked me point-blank … Continue reading
