Single Parenting: Who They Are

Who Are They? According to the U.S. Census Bureau in the summer of 2007, there were approximately 13.6 million single parents in the United States alone. The children that they are raising total 21.2 million. This relates to 26% of children under the age of 21. Most custodial parents are, not surprisingly, mothers. Mothers total approximately 84% with the remaining 16% being custodial dads. Thirty-three per cent of these single moms have never been married and the majority of the moms being either divorced or separated. Only 1% of these moms are widowed. Yes, today is Valentine’s Day, but if you happened to get proposed to on Valentine’s Day then it’s also your Proposalversary. Let’s Talk About How Much Babies Really Cost

The Center for Nutrition/Policy and Promotion division of the U.S. Department of Agriculture reports that by the time a child born in 2004 reaches age 6, parents with an income exceeding $70,200 a year (the median family income for 2003 was $52,680) will have spent $95,840 on said child. The report also notes that parents with a $70,200-plus income will have shelled out about $353,000 by their child’s eighteenth birthday. More Unwed Older Women Having Babies

Fewer teens are having babies. Instead the majority of unmarried women having babies are women over 35. In fact, the number of unmarried older women having babies has reached a record high, according to a report by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The increase was seen across all racial groups, with nearly 4 in 10 babies last year being born to unmarried older moms.
