It is Okay to “Fall Into” New Things

We talk a great deal about organization, moving forward and conscious planning here in the Single Parents blog; I thought it would be fair to talk about the other side of evolution. Sometimes, we really do “fall into” new career paths, relationships and life altering changes. This does not have to be a bad thing; in fact, some of the greatest developments in life can be surprises… It is okay to accidentally find yourself in a new circumstance. I know that we single parents may be feeling like the more we can control things, the more intention and purpose we … Continue reading

This is part 2 of a 3 part series. To visit part 1, click here. As I sat sobbing in the store frightened that my friend was dead after being struck by a truck, the cashier just held me. She offered to call my mom and I gave her the number. I waited around twenty minutes. My mom didn’t come. I decided to head toward home when I saw my mom in the road with Joy and the paramedics. I selfishly felt hurt that my mom was helping Joy and there was no longer anyone to hold me. I learned … Continue reading

17 Years After Tragedy Strikes: Prior To It All

Special needs aren’t always acquired before or at birth. Sometimes parents of perfectly healthy children find themselves in a situation where they have to make peace with a terrible accident that has changed their child forever. The other night I was lying awake in bed plagued by guilt due to something that happened almost 17 years ago. I knew in my heart I shouldn’t have felt this way, but I couldn’t seem to … Continue reading

How To Survive A Plane Crash

In a previous blog I asked the question “Do airplanes have ‘safe seats?’” After all, if you were on-board a plane that was experiencing a major problem wouldn’t you want to be in a seat that offered the best chance of survival? As it turns out, aviation safety experts say that each crash has so many different variables that it would be “very difficult — if not impossible –to determine if any one seat offers a better chance of surviving a crash than another.” But take heart, studies show between 1983 and 2000, more than 95% of people involved in … Continue reading

Thrills, Spills and Chills

Look! Up in the sky… it’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s a… falling Elvis? We all know Elvis impersonators sing, but did you know they fly too? Or, should I say, FALL? That’s exactly what happened to a member of The Flying Elvi, a 10-member skydiving team made up of Elvis Presley impersonators. The group was hired to parachute into the parking lot of a Las Vegas casino last week when, according to news reports, a “Flying Elvis” fell hard and suffered a broken pelvis in the process. OUCH! I know I shouldn’t laugh (and really, I’m not… it … Continue reading

The Almost Accident

This spring I was at my son’s last t-ball game with my two young daughters. My husband was at a Cub Scout Pack Meeting so I was attending the game on my own. During the game I was constantly having to chase my girls, ages four and two, and bring them back to the field my son was playing on. As I got up for the umpteenth time I was reminded why I had vowed to never bring my girls to another t-ball game again. After the game I had to collect my girls who had walked around the dirt … Continue reading
