Simple Mistakes to Avoid to Improve Your Photography

Have you ever taken a photo only to realize later that you had made a simple mistake that dramatically affected your photos? It’s amazing how one little detail can really make a big difference. Several years ago a friend and I were in Rome. My friend had been taking some shots with black-and-white film, so she’d put an orange filter on her lens to increase the contrast and make the black-and-whites stand out. We’d already had a busy day, but we were headed to the Colosseum, our main focus for the day. With a quick change of film, we were … Continue reading

Photo Communication

I found my love of photography in a visual communication class that helped me make sense of why and how certain images stood out in my mind. A single image can be like an article or short story; it’s just read in a slightly different way. In understanding that communication, I believe that you can take what you learn to improve your own photography immensely. One of the assignments in that class was to pick a photo that communicated something to you and write a 10-page paper on it. Ten pages? On one image? Yes. And it ended up being … Continue reading

Tips for Shooting in Black-and-White

I was this close to using a black-and-white photo of my daughter as our Christmas card picture. The photo’s muted tones complemented the card’s red border perfectly. But, at the last minute I decided to go with a double image card and stuck with colored shots. I don’t know about you, but I have a weakness for black-and-white photography. In my opinion it is timeless, simple and lends a touch of class to the décor. If you don’t shoot in black-and-white I urge you to break out of your color rut and give it a shot. As I continue my … Continue reading

Shooting in Black-and-White

One of my most cherished pictures of my daughter is a black-and-white shot taken when she was 6 months old. I had a professional photographer come in shortly after my daughter started to show interest in crawling. The prized picture features my daughter on her tummy looking straight into the camera with both eyebrows arched perfectly in little peaks. It is pure and genuine and the fact that it was captured in black-and-white further enhances the simplicity of the shot. Think about your favorite black-and-white photograph. It could be one taken of your grandparents decades ago or a winter landscape … Continue reading

If You Own a Camera, You Can Make Artwork

This idea is simple to pull off, but the effects are highly artistic and create a designer feel. Basically, if you can take a decent picture, you can create incredible artwork for your home. You can make attractive graphic prints for everyday or for special occasions, using either color film or black and white, depending on the look you want to create. A digital camera is the best choice, since you can snap as many photos as you like and only print the best ones. You’ll have to spend some time looking around to find just the right subjects for … Continue reading
