Kid’s Clutter: Making Room for Birthday or Holiday Gifts

Whether it’s a birthday, major holiday, or another special occasion, our kids tend to be the recipient’s of lots of gifts. They get goodies from us from friends, neighbors, and other family members, and it doesn’t take long for the accumulation to become overwhelming. While many gifts have sentimental meaning, there are also those toys that kids “had to have” that they have since gotten over or outgrown. These items can be handed down to siblings or donated to make room for new stuff. If there are toys that your child still plays with occasionally and you really aren’t ready … Continue reading

Cute Idea for Added Storage and Organization

This idea is perfect for a child’s room but it will also work in nearly any other area of the home. If you need a way to organize jackets, bags, backpacks, accessories or even other household items, you can hang them up in style with this idea. First, look for large, pre-cut, individual wooden letters to spell out your child’s name, the word “bath” or the name of another room, or maybe the word “stuff.” You can spell whatever you like, such as “home” or perhaps your last name. Your child can hang up accessories to keep things better organized. … Continue reading

Lighter Fare: Window Treatments

In previous articles on lightening up for spring and summer, window treatments were mentioned. Removing heavy drapes and curtains or simply opening them up and adding sheers were some of the recommended changes but if you would like more ideas, read on. If you want to let the sunshine in but have concerns regarding privacy, even during certain hours, consider adding blinds, shades, or matchstick shades to close when privacy is needed. When you want to open the windows or simply let more light in, retract the shades or blinds and use lightweight treatments such as sheers, valances, or window … Continue reading

Spring Cleaning Kid’s Rooms

My kids love and dread summer vacation at the same time. They hate the ordeal of spring-cleaning their bedrooms, even though they like the results and are happy once it’s done. It’s almost that time of year again, and I can already hear, “Awwwwww, Mom, do I have to?” Here are some tips to make things less stressful when spring cleaning children’s bedrooms: Lighten Up Relax. Kids are not going to do things perfectly so don’t expect it and you won’t be disappointed. Let kids turn on some of their favorite tunes (at your choice of decibels) to lighten the … Continue reading

Help! I’m Lost in My Kid’s Room!

Whew! That was close. I wasn’t sure I was going to be able to find my way back out of my daughters’ room. It’s not even that big, but I didn’t want to stay in there any longer out of fear that all the clothes, shoes, and accessories would start closing in on me. Who knew that many clothes could fit in one room? I understand the younger kids making a mess, but they are actually pretty good about cleaning it up. So, can anybody explain to me how two teen girls who are so particular about their personal appearance … Continue reading

Cute Ideas for Kid’s Rooms

Quite often, I come across really cute stuff that just inspires ideas for home decorating. Some ideas are inspired by crafts, clothing, and more, while others are basically new ways to implement other decorating ideas. Here are some examples that can be used for cute accents in kid’s rooms: Fresh as a Daisy I saw a cute craft project the other day, one to make a spring cap for a little girl. It was a simple baseball cap, covered with brightly colored felt flowers and buttons. It made me think of doing something similar for a décor element in a … Continue reading

Designing A Versatile Kids Room

In previous blogs I detailed the work that went into transforming my daughter’s nursery into a “big girl’s room.” It was not as labor intensive or as expensive as I thought it would be. As a result, I’m thinking of updating it again soon. My daughter will be turning three in a few weeks and while she is not a very tall child, her toddler bed doesn’t seem to accommodate her… well, let’s just call it… active sleeping. Basically, she’s a roller. Some nights are better than others, but for the most part she has a hard time sleeping in … Continue reading

More Toddler Room Decorating Tips

A few months ago I detailed the makeover we gave our daughter’s bedroom. The transformation from nursery to toddler’s room was made with careful planning and a lot of input from our daughter. (She may be a toddler, but she voices her opinions like a teenager.) Little did I know that our day’s worth of labor would simply be the start of what has turned into a multi-month long project that’s still a work in progress. Since my last blog my daughter has acquired a freestanding puppet theater, a plastic ball pit and another kid-size table and two matching chairs. … Continue reading
