Wii Love Bowling!

This past Christmas, we got our daughter a Nintendo Wii. I’ve actually been interested in getting one for more than a year, but besides being among the hardest to find game systems out there, it was also a little more of an expense than I felt like I needed to devote to myself, but after we got one for our nephew as a huge family gift, my daughter went crazy for it. When she wrote her letter to Santa, she asked for just six things and one of those was a Nintendo Wii. What Wii Love When I first wrote … Continue reading

Bowling for Dollars…er, Feminine Protection

Men might want to head on over to a blog a little more manly about now. Gone? Good. This one is for the ladies. Ditties is a maker of feminine products. They market to the young and sassy, but I figure I’m middle-aged and brash, so close enough. Right now, you can get a free pack of their items by “Bowling for Tampons”. Yeah, I know, sounds pretty strange. It’s actually a lot of fun. The pins have been replaced by, yep, you guessed it. But you wouldn’t know it if you didn’t know it. My 12-year-old son thought it … Continue reading

10 Reasons to Take Your Kids Bowling

Let me preface this blog with the comment that I don’t need encouragement in this direction. I love bowling and I’m very fortunate that my daughter loves it as well. The only drawback we have is that we don’t have a bowling alley close by, so for us to go bowling, it’s a bit of a hike. Here are my top ten reasons why you should take your kids bowling: Bowling can be played year round and you don’t have to worry about extreme heat or extreme cold Bowling is a professional sport that encourages flexibility, strength and good hand-eye … Continue reading

Family Bowling Night

About ten months ago, my daughter was invited to a birthday party at a bowling alley. She wasn’t even sure what bowling was, but since it was my husband’s turn to take her to the birthday party, she trooped off with a present under one arm. She came back, all alight and happy about the day and desperately wanting to go bowling again. Family Bowling Days A lot of bowling alleys are reinventing themselves to make them more family friendly. Two that I knew of in Virginia didn’t allow smoking on days that they were asking families to bring in … Continue reading

Growing Up With Bowling

We’ve had a couple of blogs about bowling (see “But They Couldn’t Save the Bowling Alley” and “Let’s Go Bowling”), but since bowling is such a part of pop culture, I thought I’d give you my spin on it. I was almost born in a bowling alley. My parents bowled on a league and my mother bowled right up until I was born. I remember spending much of my childhood in the bowling childcare center (why don’t they do that anymore?). Once I got old enough, of course, I was set loose with nickels (yes, nickels) in the game room … Continue reading

But They Couldn’t Save the Bowling Alley

Well, the politicians managed to find a buyer to preserve the last movie theater in the community, but another unofficial landmark of the neighborhood is history: the bowling alley. My brother used to take me there all the time; it’s where I learned how to bowl and keep score. Despite being right-handed, I bowled better with my left; I have no idea why. Was I imitating my lefty brother? Maybe. As I got older, I used to go with my friends from school; I’d meet them at their house, hang a while, then we’d walk over. They had their own … Continue reading

Bowling is not a contact sport!

Well, I’ve been to my second bowling birthday party in less than a month with my oldest, and it’s been quite an experience. The most recent one was earlier today, at the local bowling alley (which might be closing to make room for the ever-expanding department store of the area, but that’s another story). Since this was a classmate of my girl’s, many of her friends from school were there, and I was amazed at what happens when you put about fifteen or twenty six-year-olds in a bowling alley with loud indecipherable dance music playing. Apparently, bowling is a contact … Continue reading
