Does “Bully Education” Really Work?

Schools all across the country are making concerted efforts to deal with the very real issue of bulling. But are these efforts having an impact? Is your child less likely to be bullied today than he might have been five years ago? The experts are divided on the issue, and some recent research suggests that the answer could be no. Earlier this week, we were driving by a local school. There, right next to the playground was a huge sign declaring the area to be a “No Bully Zone.” I’m not sure why the sign was there. Was it to … Continue reading

Bullying Can Affect Health Later In Life

A study from Finland has found that boys who bully and boys who are victims of bullies are at higher risk for mental health disorders in their late teens and early twenties. More than 2500 Finnish boys participated in the study. At the age of eight, the boys were asked questions about bullying: if they were bullied, if they bullied others, how often it happened, and more. Parents and teachers also answered questions about the boys. A decade later, the information was compared with psychiatric information from medical exams taken between the ages of 18 and 23 in preparation for … Continue reading

The Ant Bully: A Backyard Adventure

When I was younger I was huge fan of the movie “Honey I Shrunk the Kids”. One image that always stands out in my mind from the movie is the ants. In one scene in the movie the children get lost in the yard and the ants seem like monsters. That image of larger than life animals has stayed with me well into adulthood. Life size ants are back to some extent in the movie “The Ant Bully”. In the Ant Bully a young boy named Lucas Nickle is terrorized at school by bullies. If you have ever been bullied, … Continue reading

The Bully Next Door

We had just moved and my son was feeling lost without his next door buddy Samuel to play with every day so when Mason moved in next door I was so happy. Now my son had a boy his age that he could play with. During the next few months my son mentioned a few times that Mason was not very nice to him at school. I just assumed it was because Mason did not play with Tyler at school but his cousins or kids from his own class instead. Then I received a call from Tyler’s teacher informing me … Continue reading

Being Bullied Makes Children Fat

The emotional and social devastation has a terrible effect on kids, sometimes making bully victims into bullies themselves. But here’s something new: Being bullied can make a child fat, or at least, fatter than they would normally be. Overweight children have long been targets of bullies. A report in the Journal of Pediatric Psychology detailed a study done on the effects of bullying overweight kids. One effect is that children avoid situations where they will be bullied … Continue reading

Sticks and Stones

I’m sure you’ve heard of this old saying, “Sticks and stones will break my bones, but names will never hurt me”. Unfortunately, kids remember the darndest things. It’s a fact: everyone gets picked on as a child. Some even as an adult. I remember getting called names like “short stuff”, “skinny minny”, etc. I was much shorter and quite stickly. I have always been that way. I wasn’t one to really take names seriously, and I didn’t mind being short. However, those “skinny” names are still annoying. I’m still too thin for my height, and it still bothers me. I … Continue reading
