The mass killings at Sandy Hook Elementary were beyond senseless.  Nearly a month after the tragedy millions around the world are still stunned by the horror that robbed Newtown, Connecticut, of dozens of its most precious residents. Of those millions, many are parents, who cried with Sandy Hook victims’ families in the days following the horrific shootings.  Ironically, some of those same moms and dads, who clung tightly to their own children in the hours and days after the murders, are the same ones who place their kids in jeopardy when they get behind the wheel of their vehicle. According … Continue reading

The Empty Car Seat

Recently I experienced the pain of an empty car seat. Since I’ve been taking care of our son during the days we’ve been constant companions in and out of the car during the day. I’ve found myself constantly flipping the rear view mirror down or up to check on him when we’re stopped at a light or stop sign. He is my car buddy and it is comforting to know that he is there. Recently my wife went to a baby shower for one of her close friends and she wanted to take our rambunctious child along for the ride. … Continue reading

Warm Weather Car Safety

Depending on where you live, winter can be long, depressing, and, let’s face it, cold. When warm weather arrives, many of us can hardly wait to get outside. There are parks to visit, playgrounds to explore, and beaches to comb. And yet, with all the fun surrounding warm-weather outings, some precautions need to be taken when traveling with a baby. Before you even place your child in the car, check the car seat, especially any metal buckles or other metal parts. These can get extremely hot during a warm day, especially if they are in the direct sunlight. The last … Continue reading

The New Car Seat

It was inevitable. Sooner or later our son was going to gain enough weight to outgrow his baby car seat. That time seems to have come sooner rather than later. My wife did all of the web-based research on car seats and finally found the one that seemed best for us (in, of course, a desirable color and pattern). It was delivered to our door. We signed the slip, my son clapped his little hands, we ripped off the tape and began the laborious process of figuring out our new travel friend. I’ve got to be honest: I’ve never seen … Continue reading

Car Seat Safety Following A Car Accident

My family was in a car accident this past week. We were inside our car, which was parked in a Walmart parking lot. I had just finished buckling our infant daughter into her car seat when a car struck us on the driver’s side front door. After getting everyone out of the car, calling 911, and calming our unsettled nerves, I began to consider the lasting impact of the car accident. Would all three of us be sore the next morning? Should I take my daughter to the doctor to be examined? The biggest question on my mind was the … Continue reading

Car Accident With Baby

We got in our first car accident with our baby today. It was very minor, thankfully, but it left me feeling very shaken. Our little dear has been down with a cold for a few days, and we decided a little fresh air would be good for all of us. Since we were running low on groceries, we bundled up and headed to the store. After shopping and loading our bags into the car, I got into the back and began buckling our daughter into her car seat. My husband waited in the front for us to finish, keys in … Continue reading

Bad Mommies Let Their Kids Sleep in the Car

A new study slams parents who let sleeping babies lie… in their infant car seats. According to researchers parents who allow their passed out kids to remain strapped in their car seats while they rush to unload the groceries from the trunk, grab the mail from the end of the driveway, or pick stale Cheerios from in between their vehicle’s upholstery, are putting their child’s life in danger. Oh wait. That’s me. Apparently, good mommies are the ones, who risk waking up their overtired tots by removing them from their infant seats, and placing them in their cribs to sleep. … Continue reading

Travel Gadget For Kids–The Review

Regular readers of my blogs know that I am a mother of a toddler, someone who travels quite a bit, and a self-professed “sucker for new products.” So when I see a new product that says it is made “especially for the traveling toddler,” I figure the manufacturer is speaking directly to me. Such is the case with the “Seat Chiller.” The “Seat Chiller” is exactly that—a product specifically designed to “chill” your child’s car seat on a hot day. Okay, so I live in Wisconsin, where you can count on one hand the number of days that the mercury … Continue reading

Britney And Baseball?

You’ve heard of “Bobble Head Day” at the ballpark where the first 1000 or so entrants receive a bobble head doll. Well, then you probably won’t be surprised to hear about “Britney Spears Baby Safety Night.” It’s a slightly less lighthearted event and you don’t get to leave with a doll that sports an oversized head. But, that didn’t stop the Newark Bears, a New Jersey based minor league baseball team, from hosting a “Britney Spears Baby Safety Night” on Friday. The event was designed to educate people on the proper way to transport infants in vehicles. The inspiration: the … Continue reading

Front Facing Car Seat – When?

The front facing car seat is a question many mothers struggle with as their infants develop and become toddlers. It’s hard enough to keep the baby happy in the car when they are no longer going to sleep in it. It can be even tougher on them when they can’t see Mom. The question to ask is when is it best to turn the seat from rear-facing to front-facing. Many parents do it when the baby is about a year old. On the other hand, research now shows that it is better to wait for your baby to achieve a … Continue reading
