The Cube Challenge

Remember the Rubik’s Cube? If you grew up in the 1980s you likely were as addicted to the mechanical puzzle as I was. The colorful 3×3 cube invented in 1974 by engineer Erno Rubik ignited a pop culture craze in the decade made famous by Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” and plastic jelly shoes. Today, those same jelly shoes have gone out of fashion, but the popularity of the Rubik’s cube lives on. In fact, this weekend, hundreds of puzzle junkies are in Budapest for the fourth annual Rubik’s Cube world championship–a three-day event offering big prizes to people who can solve … Continue reading

The Prize Winning Action Shot

We are horse people. My daughter rides and getting the best possible action shots has been a goal since she started. Sometimes I succeed, yet other times I fail. This past weekend I got the opportunity to really play around with my camera and get to know it better and not have to worry about capturing a shot of my daughter. She was not riding and we were at the Budweiser sponsor $25,000 Grand Prix and ASPCA Maclay Regional Finals this weekend. I got some amazing shots. Shots that were so incredibly good that they have been requested for several … Continue reading

Monday Photo Challenge – Insects, Spiders and More

Photography Challenges are designed to get you motivated. To get you to think outside the box. These photo challenges have gotten me motivated to look around me and capture much more with my camera than I did before. Last week’s challenge (the great outdoors) was loads of fun, since the weather is so much nicer and cooler we have been spending tons of time outside. Each Monday, I post a challenge that you can choose to do, or you can choose not to do. That is completely up to you. My hope is that when you do the photo challenges, … Continue reading

Easy Ways with Artwork

A simple way to add interesting details to a space is adding a piece of artwork. Whether you choose a painting, a poster, a print, or a portrait, is up to you. You can also choose a vase, an urn, a sculpture, or a statue. Maybe, you prefer something abstract, something that you don’t even know how to describe, but the piece is interesting. Go for it! Finding new ways to use interesting items is a great way to add not only texture and interest but also personality to your home decorating. Architectural elements and even exterior pieces often look … Continue reading

Desktop Supercomputers And A Contest

The next generation of desktop computers just may be arriving soon. That is because developers at the University of Maryland engineering department have created a prototype for a supercomputer that is the size of an average desktop machine. Supercomputers that have speeds that are 100 times faster than standard desktop computers have been used for years for large applications on a massive scale. But, they take up equally large physical space. This is done by a technology known as parallel processing. Until now, it has been impossible to bring that power down to the desktop level because of programing complexities. … Continue reading

Free Pure Essentials Samples

Many of us are trying to use more natural products in the home. We use vinegar for a lot of our cleaning needs, gentler soaps in our bathrooms, and natural air fresheners. Now Proctor & Gamble is bringing “natural” to the laundry room as well. Their new Tide product contains baking soda and citrus extracts. I’ve always found regular Tide to be a little harsh for my skin, so I’m looking forward to the kindler, gentler version. They’re revising Downy, too. It now comes with Aloe or Chamomile. It will be interesting to see how aloe can be incorporated into … Continue reading

A Real Travel Deal

I have written about travel deals offered by American Airlines in previous blogs, but this one may take the cake. (Mainly because you don’t have to fork over any money to qualify.) Okay, technically, I suppose you could consider it more of a giveaway than deal, but either way it involves travel… and not just to anywhere. The air carrier is giving you a chance to stroll down the star-studded red carpet in Hollywood (or simply travel to the destination of your choice) in the new Double Feature sweepstakes. The contest’s grand prize is a trip for two to a … Continue reading
