Rules of Scrapbooking

The rules of scrapbooking are in the eye of the beholder. In other words, really there aren’t a lot of set things you must or must not do in order to scrapbook. There is a false assumption among some scrapbookers and non-scrapbookers that there is some form of rules that we all must follow in order to be considered a real scrapbooker. First, let me tell you that it is not true. There is no Order of the Scrapbooker’s who ensures that things are followed. There is not some set of people that will be judging your layouts or visiting … Continue reading

Mixing Up Toys

It used to drive me crazy when my kids were little and they would mix up all the different “types” of toys in their big, elaborate, imaginary games. I went to a lot of trouble to create and label separate bins for legos, blocks, play food, etc. and then my kids would mix and match when they actually played with the toys. Turns out that all that mixing and matching actually makes for smarter, more creative kids! My need for organization not withstanding, mixing up “media” or “genre” is actually a good thing and helps kids develop problem-solving and higher-level … Continue reading

Dead Poets Society (1989)

“Dead Poets Society” is not an easy movie to watch, and I don’t recommend it for your young ones. However, it remains one of my favorite movies of all time, and I do think it would be a wonderful jumping-off point for a conversation between you and your teenagers. Robin Williams stars as John Keating, a new English professor at an exclusive boys’ school called Welton Academy. Only the most privileged can attend, and the students all feel a tremendous amount of pressure to be somebody. When Mr. Keating comes on staff, the boys think he’s going to be just … Continue reading

Scrapbooking Blogs: Creating Content

After completing all the information in the previous article, about getting started with your own scrapbooking blog, you are finally ready to concentrate on your content. The content you choose is extremely important to keep your readership levels up and to keep people coming back for more. Obviously your content should reflect your scrapbook blog’s title. For instance, if you called it something like Scrapbooking Punch Overload, I would assume at first glance at the title, that the blog was about primarily paper punching or creating punch art. Or if you called it Snips of Paper, it would have a … Continue reading

Why Every Child Should Have a Stage

Now, I am not talking about having your own personal theatre and raised wooden stage here. I do not think that is feasible for every family—BUT, I do think that even shy children are naturally drawn to the mysterious promises that a stage offers and having a place for some imaginative and dramatic play can be not only a good thing, but also a downright necessity. When my children were much smaller, we lived in a house with “sunken” family room. The family room had been added to the back of the house and it had a large carpeted step … Continue reading

Fantasia (1940)

One of the very first films ever produced by Walt Disney, “Fantasia” explores the idea of making classical music more entertaining. To this end, the animators listened to several pieces of music and drew what they saw in their minds as they listened. Some of the segments were a little dull. The conductor of the orchestra speaks between each piece, explaining what we’re about to see, and that did drag on a bit. Some of the musical numbers also failed to entertain. But we also saw some very clever interpretations. I’m sure you’ve seen “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice,” with Mickey enchanting … Continue reading
