Another Resolution

Another day, another year begins and another resolution. Today, many resolutions will be made, resolutions about planned changes in behavior, attitudes and lifestyles. I know at least one friend whose New Year’s resolution is to lose weight. For some people the changes may only be minor. For others they could mean a major shake up. But the reality of New Year’s resolutions is that that are easily made and often just as easily broken. A recent poll in the South Coast Register asked people what they thought about new year’s resolutions and most decided they were a waste of time. … Continue reading

The 4th of July: Murphy’s Most Dreaded Day of the Year

Don’t let this picture fool you. Murph may be sporting a patriotic bandana, but the 4th of July is not his most favorite day of the year. For some pets the annual trip to the vet is the most dreaded day of the year. Not for poor Murph. Vets are a piece of cake compared to the whistles, bangs, and pops exploding in the sky outside. Nothing phased our first dog, Budly. Not thunderstorms and definitely not fireworks. (But take his beloved tennis ball away and that’d spark a meltdown.) Murph, however, is very different. He’s more sensitive to loud … Continue reading

Playing with Fire on the 4th of July

We are decidedly not fireworks people. I have never set fire to anything more grandiose than a sparkler on the 4th of July. I do, however, take pleasure in viewing firework displays – both the amateur local and impressive, highly structured professional varieties – and do so from a far. This holiday, our gal is really enjoying the mini-light shows some folks in the neighborhood have been putting on during the evenings leading up to America’s birthday. We will sit out on the driveway with some milk and cookies and look skyward for the glittering flashes of red, white and … Continue reading

Fireworks and Family—Who’s Looking After the Family Pets?

We’ve talked about keeping children safe and what sort of legal (or illegal) issues we need to be concerned about when it comes to the Fourth of July—but what about the family pets? Who is looking after the family pets and making sure that THEY stay safe during the often tumultuous Independence Day celebrations? All the loud noise and the sparks and fire are very scary for most family pets—dogs, cats, rabbits, etc. Each year, humane society’s and animal shelters end up filled to bursting with domestic pets that get frightened, disoriented and run away during the Fourth of July … Continue reading

Fireworks…Do You Know the Law?

With tomorrow being the Fourth of July/Independence Day, it seems fitting to talk a little about the dangers and realities of fireworks. I wrote a week or two about the safety concerns regarding kids, families, and fireworks, but this morning I thought I would talk a little about the law. Do you know the law in your state and town when it comes to what sort of fireworks are legal and where it is permissible to set them off? In my own state, fireworks like bottle rockets, roman candles and real firecrackers are illegal. This certainly doesn’t stop people from … Continue reading

Digital Cameras, Fireworks Photographs and Scrapbooking

Capturing the fireworks on the Fourth of July or any other holiday, can be extremely difficult. Not many camera’s are designed to take the magnificent photographs you see in books and magazines. A digital camera makes it even harder, as the pictures tend to turn out grainy and unfocused in low light. Most scrapbooker’s that I have talked to, have admitted that one, they wish they had a picture or two of fireworks to include on their Fourth of July layouts. And two, that they knew how to take a better picture of the fireworks. So I’d like to teach … Continue reading

Travel No-No: Packing Fireworks In Your Luggage

Sounds like a no brainer, right? You’d be surprised–not all travelers think alike. Some actually rationalize that there is nothing wrong about packing pounds of illegal fireworks in their airline luggage. And here’s the kicker: most of them are flying to or from Hawaii. According to the Federal Aviation Administration, more than a third of all fireworks found in airline luggage nationwide last year involved flights departing to or arriving from Hawaii. Honestly, I can’t say that I am shocked by the news. (Having been born and raised in Hawaii I know the role fireworks play in the state.) However, … Continue reading
