Home Based Work and the Freedom it Brings

It’s that time of year again, time for us to celebrate the incredible amount of freedom that is available to so many of us as far as when and where we do our work. Whether you have been working from home for years, you just started working from home, or you are still in the “thinking about it” phase, right now is a great time to think about the freedom that working from home brings (or could bring) to your life. This year, it is worth mentioning that I just gained an even greater amount of freedom through my home … Continue reading

Liberation Day

Two years ago from yesterday I felt my life crumble underneath me. It was the night my ex-husband left. Unlike some, my initial reaction was relief. I had felt trapped in a miserable marriage for so long, but never was willing to be the one to walk away from it. I felt like I was going to have a second chance at happiness. Within a few moments though, reality set in. It was a fear of the unknown. Everything in my life was about to change. Over the next few months I would move back in with my parents, lose … Continue reading

“Tweeters” to Celebrate Junteenth

On June 19th, Twitter users will be celebrating an important historical event, now referred to as Junteenth (also called Emancipation Day or Freedom Day). Before I get into the details of the event, let me first give you a brief introduction about what Juneteenth is. On June 19th, 1865, Major General Gordon Granger led his troops of Union soldiers to Galveston, Texas. They were there to announce the end of the Civil War and free all slaves. While Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation took place 2-1/2 years prior to the war’s end, many African Americans in Texas were still enslaved. Today, … Continue reading

Are You Envious of Your Kids’ Summer Freedom?

Summer is in full swing and if the weather is accommodating in your area, your children are probably completely occupied with summer activities: camp, swimming, sports, playing in the park, fishing, camping, etc. For many children, the summer months seem to be a non-stop romp of play and vacation. As a parent and an adult, our children’s fun may bring us satisfaction and it may remind us of our own seemingly long childhood summers; but it can also stir up a little envy and resentment! As our children head off to day camp and the watering hole, many of us … Continue reading

Celebrate NOT Needing a Babysitter

I know that those of you with young children may find it impossible to imagine, but the day will come when you will no longer need a babysitter. As a single parent, we often spend a great deal of our energy and income trying to arrange for quality childcare for our children when we are working or during the summer months. That is why I think when the day comes that the babysitter is no longer needed, we really need to celebrate! To be honest, I am still celebrating and still counting my blessings and acknowledging appreciation every time I … Continue reading

Why Organization is Liberating

I am no Martha Stewart and I confess that I keep far more information in my head than I probably should—mostly because I do not want to take the time to write it down or get it into some sort of document format. Overall, however, I have learned that when it comes to my home business (and other areas of my life) the more organized I can get things, the more truly liberated I feel. My years of work in nonprofit organizations and all of the work I have done planning meetings, conferences and events I have learned the value … Continue reading

Gospel Doctrine: Release Barabbas

When Pontius told the Jews that he found no fault in Jesus, he sought to release the Savior as a free man. Instead, the angry mob insisted that the murderer, Barabbas, be instead released. When asked what to do with the Lord and Savior, the crowd cried out that He should be crucified. The Jewish people chose a man of the world over a man of God. When Pontius gave them a second chance, they cried out again for the convicted criminal rather than the man free of all sin. They embraced the world rather than the Lord. Repeatedly through … Continue reading

Giving Kids the Freedom They Can Handle

I once received advice from a teacher of one of my children—I was volunteering in the classroom and we were chatting one day about some of her teaching philosophies and methods. She shared with me a tiny morsel of advice that I not only took to heart, but have also applied as a guiding philosophy in my parenting. She said that she thought we should give our children as much freedom as they could handle. And, with Independence Day coming up, I thought it might be appropriate to chat a bit about freedom here in the Parents blog. The tough … Continue reading

Are You Taking Full Advantage of Freedom and Flexibility?

One of the chief “pluses” people who run their own home businesses claim is the ability to have flexibility and freedom in their work–freedom to set their own schedules, spend time with family and children, and work in an environment that feels comfortable and inspiring. Now that you are running your own home business (or seriously contemplating getting one started), are you taking full advantage of all that potential for freedom and flexibility? It can be tough to “un-train” ourselves after years and years of working more traditional jobs. Jobs where we had fixed hours, or fixed responsibilities or had … Continue reading

Teaching Kids the Responsibilities That Come With Freedom

Growing children have a natural tendency to believe that they are the center of the universe and that they have natural entitlements. I recently heard someone referring to my teenager’s generation as the generation of entitlements. With so much opportunity and stuff so readily available, it can be incredibly hard for modern parents to convey the responsibilities and sense of duty that go hand-in-hand with freedom, privileges and rights. Privileges and freedoms definitely come with responsibility and the need to have an understanding and appreciation for the realities of such freedom. For example, teaching our children the histories and reasons … Continue reading
