Homeschooling making Schools of the Future Possible

If you were an elementary school student in the 1970’s like I was, then you remember predictions of what it would be like to like in the year 2000. I remember dreams of moving sidewalks, I remember talk of hovering cars, I also remember predictions of being able to press a button and having dinner ready. Some of these technological advancements have come to pass on a small scale such as the moving walkways in airports and microwave dinners, but in general, they just turned out to be fairy tales… with one exception. What The Heck Did She Say?

You feel terrible for her or you’re still rolling on the floor laughing. Either way Lauren Caitlin Upton sure is making a name for herself… and it’s not because the beauty pageant contestant walked away with the title of Miss Teen USA Friday night. She didn’t. But, I don’t think many people noticed. A Few of My Favorite Things: Geography

Geography is one area where we hit the ground running. When I taught 5th grade, NO ONE in my class knew that Canada was the country that bordered North of the United States and Mexico bordered south of the United States. Not a single student. Furthermore, when we went to study current events several of my students identified the “middle east” as places like Ohio–you know, kind of in the middle, but eastern part of the United States. A good knowledge of geography is essential to understanding politics, government and current events. With that said, here is a list of … Continue reading

Flat Traveling: We love Stanley!

Flat Traveling is an idea based on the book “Flat Stanley” by Jeff Brown. Stanley is a boy who gets flattened when a bulletin board falls on his head. He then gets to have all sorts of great adventures as a flat boy. One of his adventures is to visit a friend in California via the postal service. The idea started with the official Flat Stanley project. Classrooms full of kids trade “flats” to learn about life in other parts of the country and world. The original project has spawned and now there are a variety of flat traveling programs. … Continue reading
