Visiting Teaching Message: Practicing Holiness

The second section of the Visiting Teaching message on practicing holiness truly touched my heart. Although there were several things that touched me in both quotes, I felt myself truly respond to Bonnie Parkin’s admonition that “holiness is a product of covenant living.” Throughout our spiritual walk with the church, we make covenants. First, we covenant when we are baptized to serve Christ and try to be like Him. Then we renew that covenant every Sunday when we take the sacrament; we restate our willingness to keep His commandments. When we go through the temple, we make several covenants, and … Continue reading

Devotions of Purity

The concept of purity, cleanliness, or righteousness is something which is lost in today’s society. If you read my article over the pure life, you probably have some idea of what I am talking about. People live in such a way as if there are no consequences for the things they do in their life. However, living a life in such a way often means that one’s life is completely filled with the mire of sin. According to Romans 3:23 “all have sinned” and are therefore impure and unclean; however, Christians need to be always removing the waste of sin … Continue reading

In The World, But Not Of the World

I’ve heard this said quite a few times. I’ve had to sit and really think about what it means to be in the world, but not of the world. I think I’ve got it figured out! If we are not supposed to be of the world, what are we supposed to be of? James tells us in chapter 4 verse 4 of the Bible that having a friendship with the world is being an enemy of God’s. Sounds serious. But when you look deeper, it’s not talking about having friends in the world or enjoying life, rather it’s talking about … Continue reading

Sunday Christians

Sunday Christians, by my definition, are those who put on their Christian face to attend church on Sunday morning, but tend to forget it on their way home. I’ve sadly seen this with many who’ve been raised in a church but have never really sought out a personal relationship with God. I see it with others too though. Perhaps some of these people may believe going to church is their way of paying respects to God. While that is good too, it’s really important to get connected so you can be effective for Christ 7 days a week. My understanding … Continue reading

Have We Lost Our Fear Of God?

What a loving, merciful, gracious God we serve! He is so patient with us. He is the giver of all that is good. Jesus was even sent from heaven and born among men to walk with us fulfilling prophecy, dying for our sins and rising again! We certainly have a lot to be praising Him about. I enjoy going to church and celebrating God’s goodness with other believers. Somewhere in all the celebrating and political correctness of many churches, there seems to be a lack of correction and striving for holiness. Sadly, I see it in my great church too. … Continue reading
