Saving Money as a Homemaker

I was recently reading in a book how the author disliked the word “homemaker.”  It made her feel as if she was in a subservient role.  Maybe I’m old-fashioned but I tend to see this word in a different light.  In fact, I believe it is a time-honored tradition that can still work in today’s modern world. Any woman who has ever lost her job or has questioned joining the workforce just might find a great deal of satisfaction in being a homemaker.  I know, I know…this isn’t the 60’s and June Cleaver isn’t real. But perhaps we as a … Continue reading

Two Secrets to a Guest-Ready Home

I don’t have the cleanest home in the world, and not every area is neat and organized.  But it is almost always guest-ready.  So if I get a phone call that someone is dropping by, I usually don’t have to run around like a chicken with its head cut off to straighten things up. So what’s my secret?  I have a couple. Let me share the first one.  It is that I don’t make messes and I don’t allow for them. If there is a struggle you or someone in the home is having, when it comes to messes, then … Continue reading

My Decision To Stay Home

When people hear that I quit my teaching job to be at home full-time with my daughter, they often respond, “You are so lucky that you can afford to do that.” I indeed feel very lucky. I know I’m blessed, and I’m thankful for it. Contrary to what people might think, however, I don’t stay home because we have piles of money just sitting around. I don’t live in a situation where we have so much money that I decided I might as well not work. In fact, my husband is a full-time student. Not only do we not have … Continue reading

Are You “Martha Stewart Challenged”?

My friend is funny. She always says things that make me laugh. Her latest is her new habit of calling herself “Martha Stewart Challenged.” When she asked how I would like it if I was thus challenged, I replied, “Hey, who isn’t?” I’ve got nothing on Ms. Stewart. I just like decorating and finding new ways to do things around the house to keep from becoming bored (and boring). I don’t want to get to the point where the only things I have left to talk about with my husband are the best carpet cleaners for pet stains or just … Continue reading

Homemaker’s Help List: Three Tips

It doesn’t matter if you’re a stay at home mom (or dad), work at home mom, or if you work outside the home; anyone that helps make a house a home is a homemaker by my definition. Try these tips: Work on Sleep A great way to work on a good night’s sleep is to put off simple chores (nothing strenuous) until shortly before bed. Folding a load of towels or matching socks while watching TV is a good example. You’ll go to bed with a sense of accomplishment and one less item on your “to do” list for tomorrow. … Continue reading

Stay at Home Moms

Whether you work at home running a home business or your home (and family) is your work, you have a lot of responsibility. You deserve a break, a pick me up, a little downtime. While downtime may involve different things for different people, most stay at home moms need to actually get out of the house once in a while. There’s nothing wrong with that, so don’t feel guilty. I used to feel guilty about it. After all, what kind of mom would want to get out and away from her family? The kind that likes her sanity. Getting away … Continue reading

Housewife vs Career Wife

About ten years ago, I could not imagine being a housewife. Reared in the 80s, I had some pretty strong viewpoints on the rights of women and believed rather firmly that any woman who was a housewife was surrendering her right to be her own person. Okay, now I didn’t say I was bright back in those days. Still, the concept seemed alien. What a difference a generation can make. Having been both a career wife and a housewife since that time and maintaining what I believe is a happy medium between the two (yeah, there is a happy medium) … Continue reading
