Global Obesity Bigger Concern than Hunger

I often blog about hunger in my Green blog because not only are people all over the world going without food, there is hunger in America as well.  But, I also realize now that sometimes the lack of food also doesn’t mean out-and-out hunger but a lack of healthy food and some people who are from food-insecure homes are actually overweight. That may have something to do with a recent study conducted by almost 500 researchers for the Global Burden of Disease that said that globally, obesity is a bigger health concern than hunger. One of the co-authors of the … Continue reading

This Saturday is Stamp Out Hunger Day

This Saturday, your letter carrier, i.e. mailperson, will pick up canned goods and non-perishable food items for the annual “Stamp Out Hunger” drive. The National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) has been doing this for 18 years now. This year, Campbell Soup Company is teaming up with them in what is the largest single-day food drive in the country. The letter carriers do this every May to help stock of the food pantries, which often run short of food during the summer. Despite hard times, the letter carriers collected 73.4 million pounds of food last year. The U.S. Department of … Continue reading

Ways to Suppress Hunger

Half the time, I know I eat because I am bored or stressed. Sometimes I find myself eating when I know good and well that I am not hungry. I ran across an email the other day titled Natural Appetite Suppressors, so I decided to do some research to see what I could find to help me. One that I know of (because my husband is always reminding me of it) is water. If you feel like eating something, drink some water. I try to remember this one because not only will the water make me feel full and suppress … Continue reading

Moose is Full of Mischief!

I guess even dogs can get a wild hair now and then. My dog Moose (a German shepherd mix) has been full of mischief lately! It started a few nights ago. The dogs and I went to bed around ten (our usual bedtime, give or take an hour or so) after one last quick trip outside for piddles. Around 1:30 in the morning, something drags me out of slumber. Fwee! Fwee! This is the noise Moose makes when he wants attention; it’s a pathetic cross between a whine and a whistle. Moose only has the one “distress” noise, so I … Continue reading

“I Still FEEL Hungry”

I couldn’t help but ask my son the other morning after he had cooked himself 6 fried eggs, sliced up a large apple, and was having a big bowl of cereal–all for breakfast–if he was really THAT hungry, or if he was eating for other reasons. He looked at me, perplexed, through his nearly 16-year-old eyes and answered, “I certainly FEEL hungry.” He went on to explain that he was hoping if he ate enough for breakfast, it would hold him over until lunch without feeling like he needed to have a snack. This is the kid who does tend … Continue reading

The Dietary Problems of Poor People

Children who go into the foster system have usually been deprived of food. Poor people not only have little food, what they do have is often unhealthy. The children in the foster system have been at the bottom of this food chain. That is why foster / adopt parents see so many alarming food habits in the children that they are raising. Various food banks in San Antonio, Texas, are trying to deal with the dietary problems of poor people in their area. They are dealing with it in two ways. First, they are trying to distribute healthy food and … Continue reading

A Can-Do Event

My mom just sent me pictures of a recent event she attended with my grandmother in Hawaii. It was a show meant to raise awareness of hunger issues, but done so in a non-traditional sort of way. Architects and engineers gathered in Honolulu… and in more than 75 other cities around the country (such as New York and Chicago) for “Canstruction 2006” where they designed and built giant sculptures made from canned goods. In Hawaii one group of local architects built a massive “spamburger” out of 1100 unopened cans of SPAM. Meanwhile, this year’s top winners in New York included … Continue reading

Aromatherapy for Appetite Loss

You may lose your appetite for any number of reasons: an illness, stress, depression, or even as a side effect of some prescription and over-the-counter drugs! For me, I tend to have no appetite when I’m really depressed. Aromatherapy can help stimulate your appetite — sometimes just smelling fragrant cooking herbs can get your mouth watering and your stomach growling. Try sniffing scents like anise, cardamom, cinnamon, cumin, fennel, or ginger. Love Italian food? Try basil and garlic to engage your appetite. Or try these recipes for easy (and delicious) Italian soups. Have a sweet tooth? Try a Chai latte, … Continue reading

The Hunger Junk Food Path

A huge stumbling block in any weight loss program is hunger. While that may sound a bit hinky, consider that when you are hungry – your concentration is reduced and distractions are increased. When you are hungry, you begin to think about food – I daresay obsess about it. Hunger leads to mistakes like picking up junk food when you have to run in and pick up a gallon of milk. Grocery stores don’t help in this equation because most of them feature candies, chips and other sugar heavy foods at the checkout stands. They are there because grocery stores … Continue reading
