“Hypo-Parenting” is Not a Parenting Style

Have you ever wished that you could hypnotize your children so they would behave the way you wanted them to? One parent has been doing exactly that, though there is no science to support the idea that hypnosis is an effective parenting tool. Lisa Macheberg is a hypnotherapist who has three children. She says she started hypnotizing her children the help them get through the night without wetting the bed. She didn’t stop there, though. She now uses hypnotizing as a tool to help her kids deal with range of problems from performance anxiety to difficulty focusing. In an ABC … Continue reading

History of Hypnotherapy: Erickson

Milton Erickson was an American psychiatrist who believed that the unconscious mind was separate from the conscious mind. The unconscious mind, he believed, was always listening — so whether or not a patient was in a trance, a suggestion could make an impact on an unconscious level. Erickson also believed that a trance was not a special mental state — it was a common, everyday occurrence. Any person could at any time become so immersed in an activity that it blocked out all other stimuli. During these everyday trances, you might notice a person gazing off to the side, the … Continue reading

History of Hypnotherapy: Mesmer

Austrian physician Franz Anton Mesmer is considered one of the fathers of modern day hypnotherapy. Mesmer believed that illness was caused by an imbalance of magnetic fluids in the body. Any imbalance, he theorized, could be corrected using a natural force in humans and animals called “animal magnetism”. A hypnotherapist could use his own magnetism to heal imbalances in the patient. In 1766, Mesmer published his doctoral dissertation: On the Influence of the Planets on the Human Body. It discussed his belief in the magnetic “tides” in the human body — some that could be influenced by movements of the … Continue reading

My Experience with Hypnotherapy

I was at a writing retreat in March 2007 in the Quinault rainforest in Washington State. Four days of nothing but rain and writing — no cell phone service and no internet. It was heavenly! (And productive — I wrote ten thousand words on a novel over the long weekend.) One of the writers there was a licensed hypnotherapist. While we were both taking a break from writing, he offered to hypnotize me. I’d never been hypnotized before, and said so. We chatted for a few minutes about what hypnotherapy could do, and how it worked. Curious, I agreed to … Continue reading

Can Hypnotherapy Help You Create a Healthy Lifestyle?

A friend of mine hates answering the phone. She hates it so much that she ignores any calls from unknown numbers and never even checks her voicemail. As a small business owner, she fears that she’s losing lots of business — but even that won’t get her to listen to her messages. She mentioned wanting to try hypnotherapy to help get her past her phone problems. Personally, I think it’s a good idea. Hypnotherapy isn’t just the stage tricks we see at fairs and on television. Working with a trained, licensed hypnotherapist can help a person make huge life changes. … Continue reading

Hypnosis for Morning Sickness

Morning sickness affects many pregnant women. If you suffer with nausea every morning, you have likely tried a variety of home remedies to ease the queasiness. Some women are finding relief from their symptoms through hypnosis. Hypnosis is a natural method for treating morning sickness. You aren’t ingesting anything that can cross the placenta. It’s completely safe for the baby. Anti nausea medications are sometimes given in extreme cases of morning sickness, but it’s best to avoid them if possible. It works by putting you in a deep state of relaxation. When you are in the relaxed state, your mind … Continue reading

Why I Chose Hypnobirthing

I was led to hypnobirthing, because I was looking for a tool to help me to have a natural childbirth. I had wanted to have a natural childbirth with my first child, but the class my husband and I took only taught us a few breathing techniques. We didn’t practice, and so I became overwhelmed and received an epidural. For the birth of my second child, I decided to take the easy way out and get the epidural before things got rough. But I did not feel good about an epidural for my third child, and so I needed to … Continue reading

Did Hypnobirthing Work for Me?

Hypnobirthing worked for me on many levels, but I did not have a completely pain free experience. At the same time I was not seeking a completely pain free experience and so I was not disappointed in the results. I used the Hypnobabies program, which is a home study program. The classes last about six weeks. You read from a manual and then listen to a CD every day. You can slow down the classes by listening to the CDs for a longer amount of time. After you complete the class you are supposed to follow a maintenance program, which … Continue reading

Demonic Doors

Demonic oppression happens a number of ways. We as believers genuinely in Christ cannot be possessed by demons because what fellowship has light with darkness (2 Corinthians 6:14). This does not mean that we can’t open doors for demonic oppression in our lives. As a Christian, I believe the Holy Spirit will guide us to truth as we seek the Lord. God is gracious to work in us, changing our hearts to desire what He wills for us. Still, not everyone is receptive or at the point in their walk where they discern things in their lives that can draw … Continue reading

Mind Over Medicine

Hypnosis isn’t just for entertainment anymore… hypnosis has become part of the treatment options at some of the nation’s top research hospitals! Doctors have started to turn to hypnosis to help patients through childbirth, chemotherapy, and even certain surgeries. Let’s get one misconception out of the way: hypnotism isn’t sleeping. You are awake and aware throughout the whole thing. And one more misconception: you can’t be compelled to do things you don’t want to do. Nobody is going to make you cluck like a chicken or bark like a dog. Psychologists describe hypnosis as an altered mental state. Most people … Continue reading
