Chihiro’s Infection

A popular topic at the pets blog is pet health; examples of various maladies your pets might contract, and what to do if that happens. Unfortunately for me, last week I made my second trip to the vet in a month. But that’s fortunate for you, because it gives me more pet health insights to share. This time, we’re not sure what Chihiro’s original problem was. Maybe she had a bug bite. Maybe she had a scratch on her nose as a result from her playtimes with the cat. We noticed a bump on her nose in the middle of … Continue reading

Belly Button Infections

We most often think of belly button infections as something suffered by persons who have pierced their naval. While this does account for a significant portion of the infections, piercing is not the only way you can get an infection in your belly button. When I was a little girl, my father (I think it was my father, but he’s denying all knowledge) told me that I shouldn’t stick my fingers in my belly button or it would turn black. Being the impressionable soul that I was, I’ve never stuck my fingers in my belly button, and yet last week, … Continue reading

Tabby’s Second Emergency Trip to the Vet

Okay, this little cat is causing my heart a lot of trauma. First there was the way I found her, then there was her spay surgery, where I not only learned she had been pregnant but which led to complications. Then yesterday there was “the rupture.” The Red Spot: Tuesday 9:45 a.m. After her bout with mastitis last week, Tabby rebounded beautifully over the weekend. By Monday she was almost completely back to normal. Tuesday morning a tech from Dr. Singleton’s office called to check on Tabby. I told them she was doing fine, then reached down to pet her … Continue reading

Hospital Acquired Infections

If you are going into the hospital for testing or surgery, you don’t want to come out feeling worse than you did when you went in! But what’s the real chance of contracting a hospital-acquired infection? The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate that five or six out of every one hundred people who are admitted to a hospital end up with some kind of hospital-acquired infection. But that rate can drop by a third if appropriate measures are taken. Anything that enters the body — like an I.V. or a urinary catheter — can give infection a … Continue reading

Yeast Infections in Pregnancy

Yeast infections are a common discomfort during pregnancy. For some women, they occur more frequently during pregnancy than at any other time. The exact reasons for this are unclear. One theory is that the changing hormone levels create an atmosphere more favorable to the growth of yeast. Another theory is that the immune system decreases, allowing for the overgrowth of yeast. The symptoms of a yeast infection include: itching, burning and redness. You may notice a thick, white discharge. In some cases, swelling can result from a yeast infection. You may experience pain during intercourse or a burning sensation when … Continue reading
