Kids and Cameras—When Saying “Cheese” Just Doesn’t Cut It

Getting my 3-year-old to smile for the camera is relatively easy once I utter her three favorite words: “Okay, last one.” Children and picture taking (or more specifically, how to get your children to smile on cue) was the topic of conversation at a recent playgroup I attended. One of the mom’s in our group was complaining about her digital camera’s “shutter lag” (that aggravating delay between the moment you press the button and the time the picture’s actually taken) and how frustrating it was to get her 3-year-old and 20-month-old to smile long enough to document their angelic grins. … Continue reading

Getting Your Kids to Smile… for the Camera

Tomorrow is Thanksgiving… a time when family and friends gather to share a meal and a few laughs. As I mentioned in a previous blog it is the perfect opportunity to capture candid moments and an even better time to take a family portrait–especially if the occasion marks the homecoming of relatives who are unable to make it back for every family function. When it comes to family photos, typically, it’s the kids family photogs are most concerned about getting to smile for the camera. In my case it’s the kids and reluctant adults that I have to deal with. … Continue reading

More Tips On Photographing Newborn Babies

That tummy shot of my daughter in my previous blog is one of my all-time favorites… mainly because it captures such genuine emotion. I took that picture at my parent’s house, but we were the only ones home at the time so there were limited distractions. I placed her on her tummy and grabbed my camera. At the time she was more interested in my black camera than she was with any of the toys I had out. Getting a shot of her looking directly at me was a breeze because she was genuinely interested in the object I was … Continue reading

Tips On Photographing Babies

Whenever I hear one of my friends complain about how hard it is to photograph their infants I always say with a smile: “You think it’s hard now wait until they’re older and they can actually run from the camera.” (One of my favorite “Tummy Shots”) I don’t know about you, but I never had a problem getting great shots of my child when she was an infant. My problems started when she learned the word “no” and was old enough to hightail it out of a room the moment she saw me reach for my camera. (We’ve since worked … Continue reading

Snapping Frameworthy Shots Of Your Kids

We have been experiencing record high temperatures in our neck of the woods. Last week we were back in the 80s—-that’s 20 degrees warmer than normal for this time of year. Naturally, this led to all kinds of excitement around our home. My daughter and I spent the majority of the week outdoors. We grabbed our kites and headed to the park where I was able to capture more “summertime” magic on film. I love taking shot of my daughter at play, especially when she’s outdoors. Believe me; it’s much easier trying to get candid shots of 3-year-olds when they … Continue reading

Snapping Keepers Of Your Kids

Taking pictures of your kids is one thing… finding ones that are worth keeping is an entirely different story… at least in my home. I’ve taken thousands of pictures of my daughter. I’m not kidding—thousands. Of those, I’d estimate only about half are worth showing off. To say photographing children can be a challenge is an understatement. Because I shoot with a traditional film camera I don’t even bother getting it out if my child is not well fed and rested. It simply isn’t worth it. Young children are unpredictable. When they aren’t flashing bunny ears behind their siblings’ heads … Continue reading
