Let’s Build a Clubhouse – Marilyn Singer

What group of kids doesn’t want a clubhouse? I know I did when I was younger, but I sure didn’t know the first thing about making one. “Let’s Build a Clubhouse” by Marilyn Singer takes the desire one step further – let’s also talk about how to actually pull it off. Our main character calls all his friends on the phone and tells them his idea – to build a clubhouse where they can all hang out. They think it’s a great idea, and Daniel has even drawn up some plans. We’re then told what a plan is, and why … Continue reading

The “Building” Years

Building as an activity and a type of learning play is fairly common for the early elementary aged child. For children who are ages four to eight or nine, building with blocks, legos, or even chairs, pillows, and blankets is an important way to play (both socially and independently), and learn basic math and spatial skills. Parents can provide plenty of supplies and space to encourage this natural interest in “building.” While children may start stacking blocks and toys on top of each other when they are older babies and toddlers, the interest in building doesn’t really take off until … Continue reading

Goals – Building, Living and Being Inspired

Every day we hear about the threat of obesity against our children, our future and ourselves. Fitness and health are more than a niche market, in fact, it seems like everyone is getting in on the act. My mother called me yesterday and we were talking and she mentioned off hand that she just picked up an elliptical machine. You could have scraped my jaw off the floor! My mother bought an elliptical machine? She ordered an elliptical machine, received delivery, put it together and plans to use it. WOW! Then she tells me something else that threw me, up … Continue reading

Bob the Builder

Can he fix it? Yes, he can! “Bob the Builder” is a wildly popular children’s television show. First appearing on Nickelodeon, and now a regular on PBS, “Bob” is a claymation creation about a building yard and the owner (who would be Bob) his helper, Wendy, and all the machines they use every day. Each of these machines is alive and has a personality all their own. Scoop is a yellow digger truck with a scoop on the front. He’s the first truck Bob ever bought back in the day, and they’ve constructed a lot together over the years. Scoop … Continue reading

Frugal Kids: Free Building Set

My 5-year-old son loves to build things. He carefully plans out machines and devices that in his imagination could do everything from picking up toys to feeding the cat. Sure we have invested in Legos, K’nex and Mega Blocs, but the downside to these toys is that unless you have an unlimited budget, the various pieces can add up in expense. Also, you can’t save any of the creations to display unless you never want to build anything with the pieces again. Our family’s solution was to establish a building box. Remember Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (with Johnny Depp)? … Continue reading

Going Green—Part 1: What is A Green Home?

When my friend asked me if I would like to tour a “green house” with her I gave her a puzzled look. After all, she knew I was in the midst of winterizing my yard. Then I thought perhaps she wanted to spruce up her home with some potted plants so I agreed. When she told me tickets to tour this “green house” would run about $10 I knew there was something I was missing. Turns out this “green house” is actually a “green home.” A building made of ecologically correct material. I took the bait and we toured the … Continue reading
